Microdermabrasion has been on salon menus long enough that clients ask for it without being sold it, which makes it one of the more reliable additions to a treatment list. It fills a full appointment slot, it suits a course of sessions rather than a one-off, and the results are visible immediately — which is what brings people back.
Seven microdermabrasion units carry the treatment itself: what the machine is doing, what the client experiences during and after, the routine in order, how to adapt it for different skin conditions, aftercare, and machine maintenance. Behind them sit Foundation, Anatomy and Physiology and Skin Healthcare, giving 30 units in all. The whole course is video-led with an eBook you keep.
Microdermabrasion and hydradermabrasion are the two machine exfoliation routes, and knowing both lets you offer a dry or a wet option depending on how reactive the skin is. Dermaplaning is the manual equivalent and needs no machine at all, which makes it a cheap second string. Many therapists then add LED light therapy to run at the end of a session while the client rests. All of these come together in the Ultimate Facial Course.
Most students finish inside a few weeks. The seven treatment units are the quick part; the nine-unit Anatomy and Physiology module takes longer and is worth not rushing, because knowing what sits under the skin is what stops you working too aggressively. Access is for life, so the machine maintenance unit is there whenever you need to check something.
The handpiece work is shown on video from angles a classroom seat would not give you, and you can replay a single pass until you can see exactly how the skin is being held taut. What online cannot do is put a machine in your hands, so the practical work happens at home on volunteers once your equipment arrives.
All 30 units carry their own assessment and you submit each one online as you go. Every unit is assessed, and if an assessment needs another try there is no limit on resubmissions and no extra charge. Nothing is marked on photographs of client work, so you are not waiting on models to finish the course.
No — it is a professional training course with a certificate on completion rather than an accredited qualification. Machine treatments are an area where insurers vary a good deal in what they will cover, so speak to your insurer about microdermabrasion specifically before you advertise it.
Not formally, though you should be comfortable reading skin before you start. The Skin Healthcare module covers skin types and disorders, and the treatment module devotes a whole unit to treating differing skin conditions — that unit assumes you can tell congestion from sensitivity, which is easier with some facial experience behind you.
A microdermabrasion machine, either crystal or diamond-tip, plus consumables for whichever you choose and the usual prep and aftercare products. This is the biggest equipment outlay of the advanced skin treatments we teach. There is no kit to buy from us, and the course includes a unit on maintaining whichever machine you buy.
Yes, through the twelve-unit Foundation module — promotion, retail, payments, reception and the legislation around selling products. Microdermabrasion in particular is usually sold as a course of sessions rather than singly, so the units on promoting products and services are the ones to read with that in mind.
Yes. You can spread the cost over three interest-free payments at the checkout.
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels
Founder and Head of Training
Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.

Microdermabrasion resurfaces the skin mechanically, passing a crystal or diamond-tipped head across the face under suction to lift dead cells away. It is the machine treatment clients recognise by name, and it rewards a therapist who knows how to vary pressure and passes for the skin in front of them. This course covers the routine, the skin conditions and keeping the machine itself in order.
