Hot wax sets on the hair and is removed without a strip, so it lifts the hair without pulling at the skin the way strip wax does. That makes it the treatment of choice for coarse hair and for sensitive areas — and it carries a higher price per area than strip waxing for exactly that reason.
It is a different discipline rather than a harder version of the same one. The module runs to five units, with a whole unit on equipment and products, because hot wax behaves according to its temperature and the thickness you apply it at — neither of which matters in the same way with strip wax.
Most therapists offer hot wax beside strip waxing rather than instead of it — legs are quicker with strip, and hot wax earns its keep elsewhere. Threading covers clients who should not be waxed at all, and Spray Tanning is the service the same clients book alongside.
A hot wax pot that holds temperature, hot wax, spatulas, pre- and post-wax products, gloves and the usual consultation and hygiene supplies. Our Hot Waxing Kit covers these. It is optional, but temperature control is not — a pot that swings hot or cold makes this treatment unworkable.
There are 28 units across four modules, five of them on hot waxing. The extra unit compared with strip waxing is equipment and products, and it is the one to take seriously — most of what goes wrong with hot wax is a temperature or thickness problem rather than a technique problem. Most students complete their training within a few weeks to a few months.
Entirely online. The procedure unit shows the wax going on and coming off in real time, which is the only way to judge the right consistency — it is a look-and-feel thing rather than a measurement. You supply your own models.
Every unit is assessed, with unlimited resubmissions. Hot waxing is assessed on the removal: whether the wax came away in one piece, whether the hair came with it, and what the skin looks like afterwards compared with strip wax on the same area.
Yes — by ABT, IPHM and IGCT. The certificate is recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens. Because hot wax is often used for intimate work, check how your insurer lists that specifically — each sets its own requirements.
No. This course teaches preparation and procedure from the start and stands on its own. In practice most therapists run both, because strip wax is faster on large areas and hot wax is better everywhere else, and having only one means turning work away.
No. The Hot Waxing Kit is the straightforward route. If you already wax with strip, the wax itself is the swap — but a strip wax heater will not necessarily hold hot wax at a workable temperature.
No. The Skin Healthcare module covers skin types and disorders, which carries extra weight here — hot wax is used on thinner, more reactive skin than strip wax usually touches.
The Foundation module’s 12 units cover business promotion, promoting products and services, retail legislation, reception duties and taking payments. Hot wax sits at a higher price than strip, so the units on pricing and explaining the value of a service are where this one pays off.
Tutor feedback on every assessment, our private student group, and lifetime access — worth having when you change wax brands, since consistency and working temperature vary between them.
Your diploma is issued by Next Step Beauty and carries accreditation from the bodies below. Those accreditations are what insurers look for when you come to arrange cover.
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels
Founder and Head of Training
Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.

Hot wax grips the hair rather than the skin, which makes it the option for coarse hair and for the areas strip wax handles badly. This course covers the equipment, the products and the procedure, studied online at your own pace with tutor feedback on your practical work.
