Start at the beginning, or jump to which technique to learn first.
Every nail career starts with the same two things: a manicure a client would pay for, and a polish that lasts. These courses teach the foundations in the order a working technician actually learns them, with no previous training assumed.

Beginner Nail Courses
Listed in the order most technicians learn them: the manicure first, then colour, then the products that build length. Each course is tutor-assessed, accredited by ABT, IPHM and IGCT, and yours for life with unlimited resubmissions.
Any of these can be taken on its own, and several of them also sit inside the packages above.
I've signed up to do several courses with Next Step Beauty and I've passed my Pedicure, Manicure, Gel Polish and E-File courses so far. The course content is really easy to follow, even for beginners and there are a mixture of written resources and videos to help you learn.
I have recently just completed the manicure course and it was excellent, very easy to access and understand. Brilliant that it can be completed in own time. Next step beauty are very supportive and helpful. Would absolutely recommend Next step beauty courses to anyone.
So far I’ve completed the manicure and gel polish courses. I’m now working through UV gel extensions and E File and plan to do more. I really like the format; clear, comprehensive instructions from Victoria. So happy to have found these online courses as I’m not able to attend in person.

After Your Course: From Diploma to Your First Clients
Finishing your course is the start of the next step. Here’s how students go from learning to working with clients.
1. Practise on Your Models
You will practise on models and photograph your work as you go. Nails are judged on the finish, so the practical work and your photographs are the bulk of the course.
2. Get Your Diploma
Pass your assessed case studies and receive your diploma certificate. If an assessment needs another try, you can resubmit as many times as you need.
3. Plan Your Business
Business training is included with every course to help you set your prices, present your work and find your first clients.
4. Keep Growing
Add a technique as your client list grows. A client already in your chair every three weeks for infills is the easiest person to sell nail art or a new product system to.
Why Start a Career in Nails?
Nails are the most rebooked treatment in beauty. Gel grows out, acrylic needs infills, and the appointment repeats itself every two to three weeks without anyone having to be persuaded.
- The Rebook Is Automatic: enhancements need infilling every two to three weeks, so a client who likes your work becomes a standing appointment rather than a one-off.
- Low Entry Cost: a lamp, files, a brush and a product system. You can start from a table at home and add equipment as the bookings come.
- Visible Advertising: your work walks around on your client’s hands for three weeks. No other treatment markets itself this way.
- Room to Specialise: once the basics are solid you can move into extensions, nail art or advanced shaping and charge accordingly.
- Short Appointments, Full Columns: a gel polish fits into an hour, so a day holds more clients than it would on longer treatments.
Which Technique to Learn First
Gel polish, builder gel, fusion gel and tips all do slightly different jobs, and the names overlap confusingly. Here is what each one actually is and where it sits in a beginner’s order.
Manicure
Nail and skin preparation, cuticle work, filing and shaping, and a finished polish. Everything else is applied on top of this, so a weak manicure shows through whatever you put over it.
Gel Polish
Colour cured under a lamp. Two to three weeks of wear with no length added. The most requested salon service and the quickest to start charging for.
Builder in a Bottle
A thicker gel supplied in a polish bottle and brushed on. Adds strength over the natural nail and a little length, without mixing anything.
Builder (Hard) Gel
A firmer gel taken from a pot with a brush. Holds real structure and length, and files differently to softer gels.
Fusion Gel
A hybrid system: worked like acrylic but cured under a lamp. Useful if you prefer the control of a bead with the working time of a gel.
Full Cover Tips
A pre-shaped tip that covers the whole nail, then overlaid. The fastest route to length and a popular soft-gel service.
Nail Shaping
Square, squoval, almond, coffin. Filing accurately and symmetrically across ten nails is what separates tidy work from professional work.
Gel Polish vs Builder Gel vs Acrylic
The three systems beginners mix up most. They differ in what they are made of, whether they add length, and how they come off.
| Gel Polish | Builder Gel | Acrylic | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Thin cured colour | Thicker cured gel | Liquid and powder bead |
| Adds length | No | A little, or over a form | Yes, sculpted or on a tip |
| How it sets | UV or LED lamp | UV or LED lamp | In air, no lamp |
| Typical rebook | 2 to 3 weeks | 3 to 4 weeks, infill | 3 weeks, infill |
| Removal | Soak off | File down, soak varies | Soak off or file |
| Learn it when | First, after the manicure | Once your prep is clean | Once you can file evenly |
Most technicians end up offering all three and choose by the client’s nails and how much length she wants. Prep and removal are covered in each course. Acrylic has its own training route — see Acrylic Courses.
Beginner Nail Courses UK: Train in Nails Online From Scratch
Our beginner nail courses assume nothing. You can arrive having never filed a nail professionally and leave with a certificate for each technique you have passed.
Teaching a young learner at home? Our home education nail & beauty courses page suggests where to start and includes a term plan.
Where to Start
Start with the Manicure Course. It sounds basic and it is the single most important thing on this page: nail and skin anatomy, contra-indications, cuticle work, filing and shaping, and a finished manicure. Every enhancement you apply later sits on that preparation, and almost every lifting problem a new technician has traces back to it.
From there, gel polish is the natural second step. It is the most requested service in most salons, the quickest appointment to run, and the fastest way to start taking money while you keep training.
Then the Systems That Build Length
Builder in a bottle, builder gel, fusion gel and acrylic all add strength or length, and new technicians often buy the wrong one first. The short version: builder in a bottle is the gentlest introduction, builder gel holds more structure, fusion gel gives you acrylic-style control with a lamp cure, and acrylic is the most durable and the most technical, which is why it has a course route of its own. Full cover tips are the quickest route to length and sit alongside all of them. Decorative work such as one stroke and ombre lives on the Nail Art Courses page.
You do not need to learn them all. Plenty of successful technicians run on gel polish and one enhancement system. The Complete Nail Technician Course covers the core of this list in one enrolment if you would rather not choose.
How the Courses Work
Every technique is demonstrated on video by Victoria, our tutor, filmed close enough to see brush angle and bead consistency, and you can replay any step while you practise. You submit written work and photographic case studies, a tutor marks them and gives you feedback, and if a submission is not right first time you resubmit as many times as you need at no extra cost.
There is no timetable and no end date. Access is for life, so you can train around work and come back to the material whenever you need to check something. Most students finish within a few weeks to a few months.
Practising and Kit
You will practise on a training hand and on models, and photograph the results. Friends and family are entirely acceptable for case studies. You can buy a kit with your course or use equipment you already own — the courses teach technique and product behaviour rather than one brand’s range, so what you learn carries across whatever you end up stocking.
Accreditation
All of our nail courses are accredited by ABT, IPHM and IGCT, and recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync, Balens, Salon Gold, Westminster and SJL. Insurers set their own requirements, so the certificate is what you present to them rather than cover in itself. Business training is included with every course to help you price your work, photograph it and find your first clients.

I highly recommend Next Step Beauty, they are absolutely amazing! All the tutors are lovely and you have fun whilst learning. The courses are very well detailed but if for any reason you get stuck they are only a message away and respond very quickly. I have qualified recently in gel polish and manicure, still have a few more to go.
Nadia Jeffery
Great wee course I did on nails. Needed a lot of support and guidance as it was my first time starting out doing nails. I did it from home online and I got reassured and supported really well. Everyone who supported me was happy to help me. I definitely recommend the course to others.

Beginner Nail Course FAQs
Do I Need Any Experience to Start?
No. These courses are written for someone who has never worked on nails professionally. The Manicure Course opens with nail and skin anatomy and contra-indications before you pick up a file.
Painting your own nails at home counts for nothing against you either way — the habits you pick up as a professional are different, and they are taught from scratch.
Which Course Should I Buy First?
The Manicure Course, then Gel Polish. Preparation is where almost every lifting and peeling problem starts, so learning it properly first saves you redoing work later.
If you already know you want the full set of skills, the Complete Nail Technician Course bundles the core techniques into one enrolment.
Can Nails Really Be Taught Online?
The technique is visual and the video is filmed close in, at the angle you work from, so you can see brush loading, bead consistency and how a product self-levels. You replay it as often as you like, which no live demonstration allows.
Your own hands are assessed separately: you photograph your practical work and a tutor marks it and tells you what to correct.
Who Can I Practise On?
A training hand for the early attempts, then real models. Household members, friends and colleagues are all acceptable for case study photographs.
Many students practise on one willing friend repeatedly, which is useful — you see how your own work wears and grows out over three weeks, and that teaches you more than ten single sets would.
What Kit Will I Need?
For the manicure, files, buffers and cuticle tools. For gel, a lamp and a product system. Enhancement courses need the relevant liquid, powder or gel and a brush.
You can buy a kit alongside your course or source your own. Nothing in the teaching depends on a particular brand.
Are These Courses Accredited?
Yes — ABT, IPHM and IGCT, and recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync, Balens, Salon Gold, Westminster and SJL. Insurers apply their own criteria, so the certificate is what you show them rather than cover in itself.
How Long Will It Take?
A single beginner course is usually a few weeks to a few months, depending on how much practice time you give it. The theory is quick; building a clean, even finish across ten nails is what takes the repetition.
Your access does not expire, so there is no penalty for a slow month and no deadline to miss.
