Russian volume is the premium end of the lash menu. Instead of one extension per natural lash, you make a fan of several ultra-fine extensions and place that on a single lash. The result is a much denser line, and because each extension is finer, the weight stays within what the natural lash can hold.
It commands a higher price and a longer appointment than classic extensions, which is why most therapists add it once classic work is already booking well. The treatment module is five units — the largest of our lash modules — with a whole unit on removal and maintenance, since volume sets need managing over time.
Most therapists come to volume from classic work — Eyelash Extensions covers that and includes lash and brow tinting. Lash Lift gives you an option for clients whose natural lashes will not carry volume, and Eyebrow Definition balances the brow to the fuller lash line.
You need ultra-fine extensions in several lengths, volume tweezers, adhesive, eye pads, primer and remover, plus consultation and hygiene supplies. Our Russian Lashes Kit covers these. It is optional, though volume tweezers are the one item worth not economising on — fan making depends on them.
There are 26 units across three modules, five of them on volume work itself. Fan making is the bottleneck: it is a hand skill, and most students spend more time on fans alone than on all the written theory combined. Most complete their training within a few weeks to a few months, and there is no deadline.
Entirely online. Fan making is demonstrated close up by Victoria, which is the only practical way to see the tweezer movement — it is a few millimetres of motion. You arrange your own models for full sets.
All 26 units are assessed, with unlimited resubmissions. The volume module is assessed on fan consistency and weight: a beautiful set applied too heavily damages the natural lash, so what is checked is whether your fans match the lashes you put them on.
Yes — by ABT, IPHM and IGCT. The certificate is recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens. Volume work is sometimes treated as a separate listing on an insurance schedule to classic extensions, so check how yours handles it.
It is not a requirement, and this course teaches preparation and application from the start. In practice most students do classic first, because isolation is the underlying skill and volume adds fan making on top of it.
No. The Russian Lashes Kit is the convenient route. If you already do classic extensions you will have much of it — the additions are the finer lashes and the volume tweezers.
The Foundation module’s 12 units cover business promotion, promoting products and services, reception duties, retail legislation and taking payments. Volume is the highest-priced treatment on most lash menus, so the pricing and promotion units are where to spend your reading time.
Tutor feedback on every assessment, our private student group, and lifetime access. Fan making is the skill students most often send back for a second look, and there is no limit on how many times you can.
Your diploma is issued by Next Step Beauty and carries accreditation from the bodies below. Those accreditations are what insurers look for when you come to arrange cover.
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels
Founder and Head of Training
Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.

Russian volume means building a fan of several ultra-fine extensions and placing it on one natural lash, for a denser line that stays light enough for the lash to carry. This course covers fan making, preparation and application, removal and maintenance, studied online at your own pace.
