Add Indian Head Massage To Your Treatment Menu

Indian head massage works the upper back, shoulders, neck, scalp and face using acupressure and rhythmic movements. Clients book it for tension headaches, tight shoulders and the kind of stress that settles in the neck, and it is a common addition to a holistic treatment menu because a session is short and needs very little setting up.

You study online at your own pace. Each unit has video tutorials and an eBook covering the theory, and every unit is assessed as you go — if an assessment needs another attempt, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost. You keep your course materials for life, so you can go back over the routine whenever you want to refresh it.

What You’ll Be Able To Do

  • Carry out a full Indian head massage — preparation, the procedure itself and the aftercare advice that follows it.
  • Work the movements across the head, face, neck and shoulders, building the rhythm and pressure the treatment depends on.
  • Explain the tradition it comes from — chakras and auras are covered as a unit in their own right, so you can answer a client who asks about the energy side of the treatment.
  • Read the anatomy that matters — skin, muscles, the skeletal system, blood and circulation and the lymphatic system — and understand how each responds to massage.
  • Screen your client properly, recognising contra-indications and knowing what you need in place before you begin.
  • Handle contra-actions and aftercare, so your client knows what to expect afterwards.
  • Set yourself up to work — insurance, promoting your services, reception duties and taking payments are all covered in the Foundation module.

What To Learn Alongside Indian Head Massage

Indian head massage sits naturally alongside the treatments clients book in the same appointment. Body massage is the classical full-body routine most therapists learn first, hot stone massage brings heated stones into that routine, and Hopi ear candling is another treatment popular with the same clients. If you would rather learn more than one, the Ultimate Massage Course covers body, Indian head and hot stone massage in a single package.

Indian Head Massage Course FAQs

Do I need any experience or an existing massage qualification?

No. This is a common first holistic course precisely because it needs no prior training. You cover the Foundation module and a full anatomy and physiology module first, then the five units that make up the treatment itself.

Why do clients book Indian head massage?

Most book it for relaxation and for tension through the neck, shoulders and scalp. It is a popular choice for clients who sit at a desk all day, and because a session is short it fits easily alongside another treatment.

How long does it take?

There are twenty-six units and no deadline. This is the one holistic course without a separate skin healthcare module, so the theory is slightly shorter than our other treatments. Most students complete their training within a few weeks to a few months.

How is the course delivered?

Everything is online. Each unit has video tutorials and an eBook covering the theory, including the acupressure movements across the head, face, neck and shoulders, and you can study from a computer, tablet or phone.

How am I assessed?

Every one of the twenty-six units has an assessment you complete online. The Indian Head Massage module is assessed across five units, taking in the introduction, contra-indications and equipment, chakras and auras, the preparation and procedure, and contra-actions and aftercare. If you do not pass first time, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.

Is the course accredited?

Yes. The Indian Head Massage Course is accredited by ABT, IPHM and IGCT, and recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens. Insurers set their own requirements, so check what your chosen provider needs before you start taking clients.

Do I need to know about chakras to offer this treatment?

You do not need to believe anything in particular, but you should be able to explain the tradition the treatment comes from, because clients ask. Chakras and auras are taught as a unit in their own right so you can answer confidently either way.

Is business training included?

Yes, and it is worth attention with this treatment because a short session is usually sold as an add-on or a lunchtime appointment rather than a full booking. The Foundation module covers promoting your services, reception duties, taking payments, insurance and the legislation that applies once you start working with clients.

What support do I get?

You get feedback from experienced tutors as you work through the units, and access to our private student group where you can ask questions and share your work.

Can I pay in instalments?

Yes. You can spread the cost over three interest-free payments at the checkout.

How The Course Works

1

How You Learn

Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.

2

How You’re Assessed

Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.

3

What You Finish With

When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels

Founder and Head of Training

  • Trained in beauty therapy
  • Bachelor of Arts (Hons)
  • Certificate in Education
  • Lectured in further education
  • Founded Next Step Beauty in 2008
  • More than 100,000 students trained

Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.

Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.

She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.

She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
