A full cover tip sits over the whole nail plate rather than clipping onto the free edge. The shape, length and curve are already in the tip, so instead of building and filing a nail into existence you are choosing the right size, prepping, bonding and refining. That changes the appointment completely: a set goes on in a fraction of the time a sculpted or tipped-and-overlaid set takes, which is why so many technicians now run it as their express extension service.
It suits a particular client — someone who wants length and a clean, uniform shape, booked around a lunch break or before an event. It is also the gentlest route into extensions for a technician, because the tip does the work the file would otherwise have to do, and there is far less product to remove at the other end.
The trade-off is sizing and bonding. Pick a tip that fights the natural nail’s curve and it lifts at the sidewall within a week, however neat the finish looks on the day. This course spends its Application unit on exactly that, and gives maintenance and removals units of their own, because a full cover tip comes off differently from a half tip buried under acrylic.
The course runs across 4 modules and 24 units. Victoria, our tutor, demonstrates every stage on video, every unit is assessed, and you can resubmit as many times as you need. Study at your own pace with lifetime access; students typically take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Business training is included with every course, and you get access to our private student groups while you study.
Full cover tips cover the fast end of an extension menu. These fill in the rest of it:
You need a box of full cover tips in a range of sizes — a mixed set matters more than a premium one while you are learning to size — plus nail prep products, a primer or bonder, tip adhesive or a bonding gel, a UV or LED lamp if you are using gel, a file and buffer, and remover for soak-off practice.
Buy more tips than you think you need. Sizing is the skill this course turns on, and you learn it by trying three tips on the same finger and seeing which one sits flat.
The tip is the same shape, but the application is not. A consumer press-on goes on with a sticky tab and lasts a few days. What you learn here is a professional bond onto a properly prepared nail plate, with maintenance at two to three weeks and a controlled removal — closer to an extension service than to anything sold in a box.
No, and that is part of the appeal. Full cover tips are the one extension system that does not require you to build a nail from product first, so plenty of students start here. There is no prerequisite on this course.
The treatment module is five units and the rest is the theory shared across our nail courses. The reading is quick; the sizing is what takes repetition. Students usually take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, and there is no deadline.
All 24 units are assessed, with no limit on resubmissions and no extra charge if you need another go. Victoria Arpels, BA (Hons), Cert Ed, demonstrates every stage on video and marks the assessed work herself.
Yes — by ABT, IPHM and IGCT.
Our courses are recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens. Each insurer sets its own requirements, so check with the one you intend to use before you start taking bookings.
Two to three weeks before it wants maintenance, depending on how fast the client’s nails grow and what they do with their hands. The Maintenance unit covers the re-balance; the Removals unit covers taking a set off properly rather than letting a client lever one off and take the top layers of their nail with it.
Yes. Pay in 3 is available with Klarna or Clearpay at checkout.
You can ask questions as you work through the units, and you get access to our private student groups. Lifting at the sidewall is the recurring full cover tips question, and it is nearly always a sizing or prep issue that somebody there has already solved.
Your diploma is issued by Next Step Beauty and carries accreditation from the bodies below. Those accreditations are what insurers look for when you come to arrange cover.
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels
Founder and Head of Training
Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
