A milky ombre is a translucent white blended into a sheer nude or pink so there is no line anywhere on the nail — the colour simply stops being white and starts being skin. It reads as expensive and photographs beautifully, which is why it has stayed on request lists long after harder-edged French tips went quiet.
It is also deceptively difficult. There is no edge to hide behind: a gradient that is slightly uneven, slightly too opaque, or blended a millimetre too far shows up immediately, and it shows up on all ten nails at once. The skill is entirely in control of coverage and in blending while the product is still workable.
This is a short, design-led course and it is written for technicians who already work in gel or acrylic. The treatment module is three units, each one a complete milky ombre design worked from start to finish rather than a list of principles. It does not repeat the nail and skin healthcare module, because it assumes you hold a gel or acrylic qualification already and have covered that.
The course runs across 3 modules and 19 units. Victoria, our tutor, demonstrates every design on video, every unit is assessed, and you can resubmit as many times as you need. Study at your own pace with lifetime access; most students finish this one quickly. Business training is included with every course, and you get access to our private student groups while you study.
This is an add-on by design. These are the courses it sits on top of, and next to:
You need a milky or sheer white gel, a nude or pink base, a blending brush or sponge, a UV or LED lamp and top coat. Beyond that it is whatever system you already work in — the designs are taught so they can be worked in gel or in acrylic.
Practise tips are fine for learning the blend, but do a full set on real hands before you charge for it. Consistency across ten nails is the part a single practice tip cannot teach you.
Products you already own are fine — nothing in the course is tied to a brand.
This course is written on that assumption, and it is why the nail and skin healthcare module is not repeated here. If you are starting from nothing, take Gel Polish, Gel Extensions or Acrylic first — you need a surface and a system before a gradient technique is any use to you.
The Ombre Nails Course covers six designs across gel and acrylic — baby boomer, coloured gradients and glitter work. This one is three designs in the milky style specifically: translucent white blended into a sheer base. Plenty of students take both; neither one includes the other.
Sixteen of the 19 are Foundation and anatomy theory, which reads quickly, and three are the designs. The study time is short. The practice time depends entirely on how quickly your blending becomes repeatable — there is no deadline and lifetime access, so you can keep coming back to a design.
Yes. The designs are taught so they can be worked in either system, which is why the course asks that you already have one of them.
All 19 units are assessed, with unlimited resubmissions and no extra charge. Victoria Arpels, BA (Hons), Cert Ed, demonstrates every design on video and marks the assessed work herself.
Yes — by ABT, IPHM and IGCT.
Our courses are recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens. Each insurer sets its own requirements, so check with the one you intend to use before you start taking bookings.
Because the new content is three design units rather than a full treatment module. You get the same assessment and the same accreditation as any of our courses, but we are not going to charge a full course price for a design add-on.
Yes. Pay in 3 is available with Klarna or Clearpay at checkout.
You can ask questions as you work through the units, and you get access to our private student groups. A patchy milky gradient is almost always too much product in one layer, and that is far easier to spot in someone else’s photo than in your own hand.
Your diploma is issued by Next Step Beauty and carries accreditation from the bodies below. Those accreditations are what insurers look for when you come to arrange cover.
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels
Founder and Head of Training
Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
