One stroke is a painting technique borrowed from decorative art. A flat brush is loaded with two or more colours at once, side by side, and a single pull of that brush lays down the shadow, the mid-tone and the highlight together. What takes three separate steps in ordinary nail painting happens in one movement — which is where the name comes from, and why a finished design has a soft, blended, almost airbrushed look that tool-based nail art cannot produce.
It is the most hand-skill-dependent thing we teach on a nail course, and the most impressive on a price list. A client who brings you a photograph of a painted rose is asking for this, not for a transfer.
The course teaches it the way brushwork is actually learnable: through six set designs, each built from the same handful of strokes. Butterfly, Calla Lily, Petal, Owl, Point Setter and Rose — six units, one design each. You learn to load the brush and control pressure on the butterfly, and by the rose you are combining strokes into something that looks painted rather than drawn.
The course runs across 4 modules and 25 units. Unlike our ombre design courses it carries the full nail and skin healthcare module, so it stands on its own rather than assuming you already hold another qualification. Victoria, our tutor, demonstrates every design on video, every unit is assessed, and you can resubmit as many times as you need. Study at your own pace with lifetime access; business training is included with every course, and you get access to our private student groups while you study.
One stroke is painting. These are the courses that give it somewhere to go:
You need a flat one-stroke brush — a proper square-edged one, not a nail art liner — plus acrylic paints that stay workable on the brush long enough to double-load, a palette, water, and a top coat to seal. A liner brush is useful for detail once the base strokes are down.
Practise on paper before you go anywhere near a nail. Every one-stroke painter learns the strokes flat first, because the only variable you want at the start is your own hand, not the curve of a nail as well. Then move to practice tips, then to clients.
Paints you already own are fine — nothing in the course is tied to a brand, though thicker craft paints will fight you.
No, and that is the point of teaching it as six set designs rather than as freehand art. You are not being asked to invent a rose; you are being shown which strokes make one and in what order. The skill is in the hand, and the hand learns by repetition.
There is no prerequisite, and this course carries the full Foundation, anatomy and nail healthcare theory, so it stands alone. In practice painted art goes on over a finished set, so it is most useful alongside Gel Polish or an enhancement system.
The Nail Art Course is tools — placement, dots, tape, gems. This is a brush. One stroke produces shading and blending in a single movement, which no tool can do, and takes considerably more practice to get right. Most technicians who offer both charge more for one stroke.
Nineteen of the 25 are theory and go quickly. The six designs are the real commitment — one stroke is the one course where your progress depends on hours with a brush rather than on reading. There is no deadline and lifetime access, so you can come back to the rose when the butterfly is clean.
All 25 units are assessed, with unlimited resubmissions and no extra charge. Victoria Arpels, BA (Hons), Cert Ed, demonstrates every design on video and marks the assessed work herself.
Yes — by ABT, IPHM and IGCT.
Our courses are recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens. Each insurer sets its own requirements, so check with the one you intend to use before you start taking bookings.
The technique works in gel, but it is harder to learn that way — gel will not hold two colours side by side on the brush as predictably, and you are curing between layers. Learn the strokes in acrylic paint, then carry them across to gel if you want the extra wear.
Yes. Pay in 3 is available with Klarna or Clearpay at checkout.
You can ask questions as you work through the units, and you get access to our private student groups. One stroke is the course where seeing other students’ work matters most — a muddy petal is almost always too much water or too much pressure, and that is obvious in a photograph.
Your diploma is issued by Next Step Beauty and carries accreditation from the bodies below. Those accreditations are what insurers look for when you come to arrange cover.
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels
Founder and Head of Training
Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
