Shaping is not a service you sell. It is the thing that decides whether everything else you sell looks professional. The same acrylic set, filed to a clean almond with even sidewalls, reads as expensive; filed slightly off-centre with one nail wider than its neighbour, it reads as homemade. Clients cannot always name what is wrong, but they can see it in a photograph.
It also affects wear, not just looks. A shape that leaves a thin stress area snaps. One filed too far into the sidewall lifts. Getting the shape right is part of making a set last three weeks instead of ten days.
This course gives each shape a unit of its own: almond, square, squoval, round, stiletto and ballerine or coffin, with an introduction and a final unit on refining. Eight units in the shaping module — the largest treatment module of any single nail course we run — because each shape has its own filing angle, its own symmetry problem and its own client it suits.
It is the most transferable course on the list. Every system you work in — acrylic, hard gel, soak-off gel, dip powder, sculpting, full cover tips — ends with a file in your hand, so what you learn here applies to all of them.
The course runs across 4 modules and 27 units. Victoria, our tutor, demonstrates every shape on video, every unit is assessed, and you can resubmit as many times as you need. Study at your own pace with lifetime access; students typically take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Business training is included with every course, and you get access to our private student groups while you study.
Shaping finishes every other nail service, so it pairs with all of them:
Very little, which is unusual for a nail course. You need hand files in a couple of grits, a buffer, a dust brush, and something to shape — practice tips on a holder are genuinely ideal here, because you can work through all six shapes on one set without a client’s finger in the way.
Buy practice tips in bulk and in a long length. You cannot file a short tip into a stiletto, and the long shapes are the ones worth the repetition.
No kit is needed beyond files and tips, and files you already own are fine. If you also work with an electric file, bring it — though learn each shape by hand first, because an efile removes product faster than you can correct a mistake.
Fair question. Shaping is the one skill that appears in every single nail service, and it is also the one most technicians learn by accident rather than properly. If your sets look almost right but not quite, or clients keep asking for a shape you avoid, this is usually the gap. Six shapes, a unit each, is more attention than any enhancement course can give it.
No, and there is no prerequisite. It works both ways round: as a first course it means your filing is right before you build anything, and as a later course it fixes habits that have set in.
Almond, square, squoval, round, stiletto and ballerine or coffin — one unit each, plus an introduction and a closing unit on refining and correcting. Eight units in the shaping module altogether.
Yes, and here that is genuinely the better way round. Shaping is one of the few nail skills that transfers cleanly from a practice tip, because you are working the free edge rather than the cuticle. Work through all six shapes on tips, then take them to real hands.
Nineteen of the 27 are the theory shared across our nail courses and read quickly. The eight shaping units take as long as your hands need. There is no deadline and lifetime access, so you can come back to stiletto when square and almond are clean.
All 27 units are assessed, with unlimited resubmissions and no extra charge. Victoria Arpels, BA (Hons), Cert Ed, demonstrates every shape on video and marks the assessed work herself.
Yes — by ABT, IPHM and IGCT.
Our courses are recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens. Each insurer sets its own requirements, so check with the one you intend to use before you start taking bookings.
By hand first. A hand file is slow enough that you can see a shape going wrong and stop; an efile is not. Once the shapes are in your hands, the eFile Nail Course makes them quicker.
Yes. Pay in 3 is available with Klarna or Clearpay at checkout.
You can ask questions as you work through the units, and you get access to our private student groups. Shaping is the most photographable problem in nails — asymmetry that you cannot see on your own hand is obvious to everybody else looking at a picture of it.
Your diploma is issued by Next Step Beauty and carries accreditation from the bodies below. Those accreditations are what insurers look for when you come to arrange cover.
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels
Founder and Head of Training
Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
