A reverse smile line turns the French upside down. Instead of a white curve following the free edge, the line is set back towards the cuticle and curves the other way, so the colour sits at the base of the nail and the tip is left clear or pale. It is sometimes called a reverse French, and it is the detail that makes a set look deliberately designed rather than simply painted.
It is harder than a standard French for a specific reason: the line sits where the eye goes first. A smile line near the free edge is forgiving because the nail is narrow there and the curve is short. A reverse line runs across the widest part of the nail, close to the cuticle, where any wobble, any asymmetry and any difference between one nail and the next is immediately visible.
The technique is built rather than painted. The line is formed in product — acrylic or gel over a tip — so it never grows out, never chips and does not need repainting at every infill. That is why this course includes a Tip Application module of its own: you are setting the line as part of building the nail, not decorating it afterwards.
The treatment module runs to five units — Introduction, Application and Products, Infill and Rebalance, Removal and Aftercare — across 5 modules and 26 units in total. Infill gets its own unit because a reverse line has to be rebuilt in the right place as the nail grows, which is a different job from refilling a standard set.
Victoria, our tutor, demonstrates every stage on video, every unit is assessed, and you can resubmit as many times as you need. Study at your own pace with lifetime access; students typically take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Business training is included with every course, and you get access to our private student groups while you study.
This is a technique applied within a system, so the system comes first:
You need whichever system you work in — acrylic liquid and powder, or hard gel and a UV or LED lamp — in at least two colours, since the whole point is a line between them. White and natural pink is the classic pairing. Add tips, nail prep and a primer or bonder, a brush fine enough to set a line, files and a buffer, and top coat.
Practise tips are fine for learning to place the line, and cheap enough that you can do twenty of them. Do a full set on real hands before you charge, because consistency across ten nails is the entire difficulty.
Products you already own are fine — nothing in the course is tied to a brand, though two colours that cure or set at noticeably different speeds will make the line harder to keep crisp.
A French manicure with the curve turned round. The line sits back towards the cuticle and curves the opposite way, so colour sits at the base of the nail and the free edge is left clear or pale. Some technicians call it a reverse French.
There is no formal prerequisite, and the course carries the full Foundation, anatomy and nail healthcare theory plus a tip application module, so it stands on its own. In practice the line is built in product, so you will get far more out of it if you already work in acrylic or hard gel.
Position. A standard smile line sits near the free edge where the nail is narrow and the curve is short, which hides small errors. A reverse line runs across the widest part of the nail, right where the eye lands, so asymmetry and any difference between nails shows immediately.
Built, in product. That is the point — it never grows out, never chips and does not get repainted at every appointment. It also means the line has to be rebuilt in a new position at each infill, which is why infill has a unit of its own.
Nineteen of the 26 are the theory shared across our nail courses, two are tip application and five are the technique. The study is quick; the line itself wants repetition. Students usually take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, with no deadline.
All 26 units are assessed, with unlimited resubmissions and no extra charge. Victoria Arpels, BA (Hons), Cert Ed, demonstrates every stage on video and marks the assessed work herself.
Yes — by ABT, IPHM and IGCT.
Our courses are recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens. Each insurer sets its own requirements, so check with the one you intend to use before you start taking bookings.
Yes. The placement and the structure are the same; what changes is the working time, since gel waits for the lamp and acrylic does not wait for anything. Work in whichever system you already use.
Yes. Pay in 3 is available with Klarna or Clearpay at checkout.
You can ask questions as you work through the units, and you get access to our private student groups. An uneven reverse line is the clearest thing in the world in somebody else’s photograph and almost invisible in your own hand, which is exactly what the groups are useful for.
Your diploma is issued by Next Step Beauty and carries accreditation from the bodies below. Those accreditations are what insurers look for when you come to arrange cover.
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels
Founder and Head of Training
Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
