Semi-permanent eyeliner places pigment into the lash line, so a client wakes up with her liner already done. It is a treatment clients come back for, and it sits naturally alongside brow and lash work on a treatment menu. This course takes you from the anatomy of the eye through to aftercare.
You learn online at your own pace, with video tutorials, eBooks and tutor support, and the course includes practical training so you build the technique rather than only reading about it.
What You’ll Be Able To Do
- Understand the anatomy of the eye and why it matters for safe, accurate work.
- Consult properly before treatment — assessing whether a client is suitable and giving clear pre-treatment advice.
- Handle your equipment and pigments and work through the treatment technique itself.
- Work to professional hygiene and safety standards, including the legislation that applies to the treatment.
- Advise on aftercare so healing goes well and the result lasts.
What You’ll Need To Practise
You can use your own equipment and pigments, or buy our Semi Permanent Makeup Kit if you would rather have everything supplied in one go.

How long does it take?
You work at your own pace and there is no deadline. Most students complete their training within a few weeks to a few months, fitting it around work and family.
How is the course delivered?
Everything is online. Each unit has video tutorials and an eBook covering the theory, and you can study from a computer, tablet or phone.
What support do I get?
You get feedback from experienced tutors as you work through the course, and access to our private student group where you can ask questions and share your work.
Do I have to buy the kit?
No. You can use your own equipment and pigments. The Semi Permanent Makeup Kit is there if you would prefer everything supplied.
How long does the treatment last on a client?
Semi-permanent eyeliner typically lasts up to around three years before it needs redoing, depending on the client’s skin and how they look after it.

How The Course Works
How You Learn
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
How You’re Assessed
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
What You Finish With
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
