Ultimate Semi-permanent Make Up and Microblading Course
Four semi-permanent make up treatments in one package — microblading, ombre and powder brows, lip liner and eyeliner — each certificated separately, with the skin, colour theory and safety foundation studied once.

Who Trains In Semi-Permanent Make Up

People who are precise and take responsibility seriously. SPMU is the highest-stakes work in beauty — it is somebody’s face and the result stays — and that suits a particular temperament rather than everybody.

It is often taken by established therapists moving into treatments with a higher price point, but there is no prerequisite and the theory is built from the ground up.

Four SPMU Treatments In One Package

Clients rarely want only one. Someone who has her brows done comes back for lip blush, and the lash line after that. Covering brows, lips and eyeliner together means you can keep that client rather than refer her on.

It also means the SPMU foundation, anatomy and skin theory is studied once rather than four times — and that theory is substantial here for good reason.

The Semi-Permanent Make Up Courses Included

SPMU Techniques You’ll Learn

Eight modules, sixty-two assessed units and fifteen client case studies. That last part matters more than any other figure here: you finish by documenting real work on real clients and having it assessed, not by answering questions about it.

  • Understand how semi-permanent make up works — pigment implanted into the upper layers of the skin, and what that means for depth, pressure and healing.
  • Read skin and anatomy, so you know how skin structure, skin type and the healing process affect the way pigment settles and how long it holds.
  • Choose the right pigment using colour theory, whether you are matching a brow to hair colour or a lip to natural lip tone.
  • Map and design each treatment so shape, balance and symmetry suit the face in front of you, not a template.
  • Work four separate techniques — manual blade strokes, machine shading, lip work and lash-line work — and know which suits which client.
  • Consult and screen clients properly, recognising contra-indications and giving clear pre-treatment advice.
  • Work to professional hygiene and safety standards, including sterilisation and the legislation that applies to these treatments.
  • Advise on aftercare for each treatment, so healing goes well and the result lasts.

How To Enrol On The Ultimate SPMU Course

Enrol when you are ready — no fixed start dates — and spread the cost over three payments with Klarna or Clearpay if that suits.

Access does not expire, there is no deadline, and assessed work can be resubmitted without limit. Microblading alone runs to seventeen units, so give it the time it deserves. Business training and the private student groups are included.

Permanent work rewards patience more than speed. Take it slowly and the results will stand up.

What You’ll Need To Practise

You will need a semi-permanent make up machine, a manual microblading handpiece, needles, blades and pigments, synthetic skins to practise on, and people to work on for your case studies. If you would rather have everything supplied in one go, our Semi Permanent Makeup and Microblading Kit covers all four treatments.

Ultimate SPMU And Microblading Course FAQs

Do I have to do all four at once?

No. Each treatment is completed and certificated on its own, so you can finish one, start offering it, and come back to the next when you are ready. There is no set order and no deadline.

How long does it take?

You work at your own pace. Students who take the four treatments one after another typically spread them over several months, fitting study and practice around work and family.

How is the course delivered?

Everything is online. Each unit has video tutorials and an eBook covering the theory, and you can study from a computer, tablet or phone.

Who do I practise on?

You start on synthetic skins, then arrange your own models. Most students begin with friends and family who understand they are training, and build up from there as their work becomes more consistent.

How is my practical work assessed?

Each treatment has its own assessed practical work — fifteen client case studies in total across the four, plus your skins practice. Your tutor marks each submission and comes back with written feedback, and if anything needs improving you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.

Do I repeat the same theory four times?

No. Skin and anatomy, colour theory, hygiene and safety, consultation and aftercare are studied once and count towards all four treatments. Each treatment then adds its own technique units.

Do I have to buy the kit?

No. You can use your own machine, handpiece, needles and pigments. The Semi Permanent Makeup and Microblading Kit is there if you would prefer everything supplied.

What support do I get?

You get feedback from experienced tutors as you work through the course, and access to our private student group where you can ask questions and share your work.

Can I pay in instalments?

Yes. You can spread the cost over three interest-free payments with Klarna or Clearpay at the checkout.

How The Course Works

1

How You Learn

Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.

2

How You’re Assessed

Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.

3

What You Finish With

When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Who You’ll Be Learning From

Victoria Arpels

Founder and Head of Training

  • Trained in beauty therapy
  • Bachelor of Arts (Hons)
  • Certificate in Education
  • Lectured in further education
  • Founded Next Step Beauty in 2008
  • More than 100,000 students trained

Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.

Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.

She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.

She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
