Microblading builds a brow from fine, hair-like strokes of pigment, shaping and filling where hair is sparse, patchy or over-plucked. It is a treatment clients research carefully and choose on the strength of the work they can see, which makes it one of the more valuable skills you can offer — and one worth taking the time to learn properly.

You study online at your own pace, with video tutorials and eBooks covering the theory. You practise on synthetic skin first and submit that as your first piece of practical work, then complete three client case studies. Your tutor assesses each one and comes back with written feedback, and if something needs improving you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.

What You’ll Be Able To Do

• Understand how microblading works — pigment implanted into the upper layers of the skin, and what that means for depth, pressure and healing.
• Read skin and anatomy, so you know how skin structure, skin type and the healing process affect the way pigment settles and how long it holds.
• Choose the right pigment using colour theory, so the result suits your client’s skin tone and hair colour instead of reading as drawn on.
• Map and design the brow so shape and symmetry suit the face in front of you, not a template.
• Work the stroke technique itself — angle, pressure and depth — and build consistency through repetition.
• Work to professional hygiene and safety standards, including sterilisation and the legislation that applies to the treatment.
• Consult and advise on aftercare, so your client knows what to expect as the brow heals and how to look after it.

What To Learn Alongside Microblading

Microblading is one of four semi-permanent make up treatments we train in. Clients who want a softer, more filled-in brow rather than individual hair strokes are suited to ombre and powder brows, so many technicians learn both and choose per client. semi-permanent eyeliner and semi-permanent lip liner complete the menu, and a client who trusts you with her brows will often book the others.

Microblading Course FAQs

How long does it take?

There are forty units across four modules, and three client case studies to complete. The microblading module alone runs to seventeen units — the most detailed single-treatment module we teach — so there is more theory here than on our machine-based brow course. Most students finish within a few weeks to a few months.

How is the course delivered?

Everything is online. The seventeen-unit microblading module takes you from the history of the technique through contra-indications, consultation, patch testing, brow shaping and mapping, pigments, colour theory and skin tones, skin healing, needle configurations, anaesthetics and acute skin inflammation, to the procedure and aftercare. Each unit has video tutorials and an eBook.

Who do I practise on?

You start on synthetic skins, which has its own unit in the module and forms part of the assessed work, then arrange three of your own models. Stroke work rewards repetition, so most students spend a good while on skins before their first model.

How is my practical work assessed?

You submit photographs of your skins practice and of three client treatments for your tutor to assess, with written feedback. Stroke work is judged on the crispness and direction of the strokes and how naturally they follow the brow’s own hair pattern. If anything needs improving you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.

How is this different from ombre and powder brows?

Microblading cuts fine, hair-like strokes into the skin with a manual blade, for a brow that reads as individual hairs. Ombre and powder brows shades the brow with a machine for a softer, filled-in finish. Many technicians learn both and choose per client.

Do I have to buy the kit?

No. You can use your own blades, pigments and practice skins. The Microblading Kit is there if you would prefer everything supplied in one go.

What support do I get?

Your tutor marks the case study photographs and tells you specifically what to change — on microblading that is usually depth and stroke direction in the early submissions. You also get access to our private student group.

Is this the same as an eyebrow tattoo?

It is a form of cosmetic tattooing. The pigment is worked into the upper layers of the skin rather than the deeper layer a body tattoo reaches, which is why microbladed strokes soften over time rather than staying put.

Do I need to travel anywhere?

No. The theory and video tutorials are studied from home, you work on your own skins and models wherever you are, and the case study photographs are submitted online.

Does the treatment hurt, and will I learn about numbing?

How a client experiences it varies. Anaesthetics is a dedicated unit within the microblading module — what can be used, when, and the safety considerations — and acute skin inflammation is covered as a unit too, so you know what to watch for.
