Threading removes hair with nothing but a twisted cotton thread. No product touches the skin, which is why it is often the option offered to clients who react to wax, who are using skin treatments that rule waxing out, or who simply prefer it. It is a short appointment, so it works well slotted between longer bookings or added to a brow service.
It is a manual skill, and that shapes how this course runs. The theory is brief — three units — and the rest is practice. Victoria demonstrates the hand and mouth techniques in step-by-step video so you can watch the thread control frame by frame, then you practise on your own models and submit your work for tutor feedback.
Threading is most often sold beside a brow service — Eyebrow Definition includes threading alongside tinting and waxing if you want the full brow menu in one course. For facial and body hair removal more broadly, Waxing and Hot Waxing cover the alternatives.
Very little — threading needs cotton thread, scissors, a powder to keep the skin dry and the usual consultation and hygiene supplies. Our Threading Kit is the least expensive of our kits for that reason. It is optional, though you will get through a lot of thread while you learn.
There are 26 units across four modules, and only three of them are on threading itself — the smallest treatment module of our brow and hair-removal courses. That does not make it the quickest to finish. The reading is short, but thread control takes repetition, and most students spend far longer practising than studying. Most complete their training within a few weeks to a few months.
Entirely online. Threading is harder to learn from text than most treatments, so the video is where the course does its work — you can replay the hand and mouth techniques as often as you need and match your own grip to what is on screen. You arrange your own models.
All 26 units are assessed, with unlimited resubmissions. For the threading module, the assessment is about consistency: anyone can remove a hair, and what is being checked is whether you can work cleanly along a line at a sensible pace.
Yes — by ABT, IPHM and IGCT. The certificate is recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens, and each insurer sets its own requirements, so check with yours before taking bookings.
No. Threading needs the least equipment of any treatment we teach, and the Threading Kit is priced accordingly. Cotton thread bought separately works perfectly well.
No. The Anatomy and Physiology module opens with hair structure and removal, which is worth reading before you start — threading takes the hair from the follicle, and knowing the growth cycle explains why regrowth patterns differ between clients.
The Foundation module’s 12 units cover business promotion, promoting products and services, reception duties, retail legislation and taking payments. Threading is a low-price, short-appointment treatment, so the units on pricing and filling your diary matter more here than on a premium service.
Tutor feedback on every assessment, our private student group, and lifetime access to your materials. Threading is the skill students most often come back to review, and the videos stay available for as long as you need them.
Your diploma is issued by Next Step Beauty and carries accreditation from the bodies below. Those accreditations are what insurers look for when you come to arrange cover.
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels
Founder and Head of Training
Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.

Threading removes facial hair with a twisted cotton thread rather than wax, which makes it an option for clients whose skin does not suit waxing. This course covers the technique, the consultation around it and aftercare, studied online at your own pace with tutor feedback on your practical work.
