Starting A Beauty Career From Scratch

Most people who take this have never worked in a salon. They have been thinking about it for a while, want something of their own, and need it to fit around a job or children rather than replace them overnight.

No experience is assumed. It opens with standards, hygiene and setting up a work area, and the first treatment module is facials.

If you already work in beauty and want one specific treatment added, a single course will serve you better and cost less.

Seven Treatments Instead Of One

One treatment gives a client one reason to book. Seven gives her a reason to come back for something different, and to bring a friend before a wedding.

These seven are the ones a treatment room runs on — skin, hair removal, lashes, brows, colour and tan. The Foundation and anatomy theory is covered once rather than seven times, and the package costs considerably less than the courses bought individually.

The Beauty Courses Included

Beauty Treatments You’ll Be Qualified To Offer

Nine modules and thirty-seven assessed units.

  • Give a full facial — cleanse, exfoliate, mask and massage — and read a client’s skin well enough to choose the right one.
  • Wax a face and body safely, with the patch testing and contraindication checks that protect you both.
  • Thread brows and facial hair, an alternative for clients whose skin will not take wax.
  • Tint lashes and brows, and shape a brow to suit the face rather than a trend.
  • Apply individual lash extensions, including isolation, mapping and safe removal.
  • Apply make-up for day and evening, including colour matching across different skin tones.
  • Spray tan evenly, with the preparation and aftercare that stops it going patchy.
  • Consult and screen clients, recognising when a treatment should not go ahead.
  • Set up, price and promote your treatments, covered in the Foundation module.

Booking Your Place On The Complete Beauty Course

There is nothing to wait for. Enrol and the material opens straight away, with Klarna or Clearpay available if you would rather pay in three instalments.

Your access does not expire and there is no deadline, so the pace fits around whatever else your week holds. Work is assessed as you go and you can resubmit as often as you need, collecting a certificate for each treatment rather than one at the very end. Business training and the private student groups are included throughout.

Plenty of people in your position have done exactly this. So can you.

What You’ll Need To Practise

Seven treatments means products for each, and spray tanning needs equipment. Our Complete Beauty Kit supplies the lot in one order. It is optional — and you do not need it all at once, so work through the courses in the order you intend to start offering them.

Complete Beauty Course FAQs

How Long Does the Complete Beauty Course Take?

There are 37 units across nine modules. Seven treatments is a longer commitment than a single course, and most students work through it one treatment at a time rather than front to back. There is no deadline, and you keep lifetime access to all of it.

Do I Have To Study Them In Order?

No. Once Foundation is behind you the treatment modules are independent. Starting with whichever service you plan to offer first means you can begin taking bookings before you finish the rest.

How Is the Course Delivered?

Entirely online, with every treatment demonstrated by Victoria in step-by-step video. Across seven treatments you will need a fair range of models — faces, legs and lashes — and a space you can spray tan in.

How Am I Assessed?

Every unit is assessed and you can resubmit as often as you need. Each treatment is assessed separately, so the certificates are earned one at a time rather than as a single pass.

How Many Certificates Do I Get?

Seven — one per course. Insurers list treatments individually, so you will be asked for the certificate covering each service you intend to offer rather than a single package certificate.

Is the Complete Beauty Course Accredited?

Yes — all seven certificates are accredited by ABT, IPHM and IGCT, and recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens. Each insurer sets its own requirements, so check the full list against your policy before advertising them.

How Does It Compare With the Ultimate Beauty Course?

Ultimate Beauty is these seven plus Lash Lift and Russian Lashes. If the lash side is where you expect your work to come from, start there; if you want a broad menu at the lower price, this is the one.

Do I Need to Buy the Kit?

No. The Complete Beauty Kit covers all seven treatments in one order, which saves a lot of sourcing. Most students buy in stages as they work through, though spray tanning cannot be practised without equipment.

What Support Do I Get?

Tutor feedback on every assessment across all seven courses, our private student group, and lifetime access to the materials, so you can revisit a treatment months after passing it.

How The Course Works

1

How You Learn

Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.

2

How You’re Assessed

Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.

3

What You Finish With

When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Who You’ll Be Learning From

Victoria Arpels

Founder and Head of Training

  • Trained in beauty therapy
  • Bachelor of Arts (Hons)
  • Certificate in Education
  • Lectured in further education
  • Founded Next Step Beauty in 2008
  • More than 100,000 students trained

Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.

Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.

She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.

She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
