Builder in a bottle — BIAB is the shorthand everyone uses — is a builder gel thin enough to come in a polish bottle with a brush in the lid. You get much of the strength of a hard gel overlay with the application of a gel polish, and because it is a soak-off product it comes off in acetone rather than needing to be filed back.
That combination is why it is the most popular single nail course we run. It is the service to offer the client who says she wants her own nails to grow: an overlay adds strength and a little length to a natural nail that keeps breaking, without the bulk, the odour or the removal damage she is worried about. For a technician it is a short, repeatable, well-paid appointment that rebooks every three to four weeks.
The trade-off is worth stating plainly: BIAB is an overlay system, not an extension system. There is no Tip Application module on this course, because everything happens on the natural nail. A client who wants real length needs hard gel, acrylic or a tip instead, and knowing where that line sits is part of what you learn here.
The technique is taught in three units — Introduction, Procedure, then Maintenance, Removals and Aftercare — across 4 modules and 22 units in total. That last unit carries more weight than it sounds: BIAB does soak off, but leaving a client in acetone too long, or letting her pick at a lifted edge, is how natural nails get thinned by a product that was meant to protect them.
Victoria, our tutor, demonstrates every stage on video, every unit is assessed, and you can resubmit as many times as you need. Study at your own pace with lifetime access; students typically take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Business training is included with every course, and you get access to our private student groups while you study.
BIAB covers the natural nail. These cover everything a client might ask for next:
You need a builder-in-a-bottle gel — one bottle is enough to learn on — plus nail prep and a bonder or base, a UV or LED lamp, a cleanser, a file and buffer, top coat, and remover wraps or foils for soak-off practice. A slim detail brush helps with the cuticle line.
Practise on real hands, not tips. The whole skill here is building an apex on a nail that flexes and sealing against a living cuticle, and a plastic tip has neither.
Our Builder in a Bottle Kit has the set in one order if you would rather not source it piece by piece. Products you already own are fine — nothing in the course is tied to a brand, and BIAB-style gels are sold under a range of names.
Thickness and removal. BIAB is thin enough to brush from a bottle and soaks off in acetone, which makes it ideal as an overlay. Builder (Hard) Gel is a thick potted gel, non-porous, filed off rather than soaked, strong enough for real length, and taught here with a tip application module. Different clients, different answers — most technicians offer both.
Only a small amount of length over the free edge. It is an overlay system, which is why there is no tip module on this course. Promising a client a long set in BIAB is how you end up remaking it.
No, and this is one of the best places to start. If you can apply gel polish you already have most of the handling; what is new is building an apex and controlling a thicker product near the cuticle.
Applied and removed properly, no — it is usually chosen precisely to protect a nail that keeps breaking. Damage comes from over-filing at prep, soaking far longer than needed, or a client levering a lifted edge off. All three are covered, because the product’s reputation rests on the removal rather than the application.
Nineteen of the 22 are the theory shared across our nail courses and read quickly. The three BIAB units are short but want practice on real hands. Students usually take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, with no deadline.
All 22 units are assessed, with unlimited resubmissions and no extra charge. Victoria Arpels, BA (Hons), Cert Ed, demonstrates every stage on video and marks the assessed work herself.
Yes — by ABT, IPHM and IGCT.
Our courses are recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens. Each insurer sets its own requirements, so check with the one you intend to use before you start taking bookings.
No. Builder-in-a-bottle gels are sold under a range of brand names and the technique is the same across them. What does vary is viscosity, so a thicker one will need thinner layers and a slower hand near the cuticle.
Yes. Pay in 3 is available with Klarna or Clearpay at checkout.
You can ask questions as you work through the units, and you get access to our private student groups. Flooding the cuticle is the recurring BIAB problem and it is nearly always too much product on the brush rather than a technique fault, which is obvious in a photo.
Your diploma is issued by Next Step Beauty and carries accreditation from the bodies below. Those accreditations are what insurers look for when you come to arrange cover.
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels
Founder and Head of Training
Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
