Add Fusion Gel To Your Treatment Menu

Fusion gel — sold as PolyGel or control gel depending on the brand — is a thick, putty-like product that sits between acrylic and soft gel. You squeeze a bead out, move it into place with a slip solution and a dual-ended tool, and it stays exactly where you put it until you cure it. No monomer smell, no race against a self-levelling product, and a finished nail noticeably lighter on the hand than acrylic of the same length.

That working time is the whole reason to learn it. A technician who finds acrylic unforgiving often gets a cleaner apex out of fusion gel on the first attempt, because the product waits. Clients notice the lack of odour, which matters if you work from home or share a space.

What it asks for instead is discipline with the slip solution and the lamp. Too much slip and the bead will not hold a shape; too little and the tool drags. Cure a bead that is too thick and you get heat spike and a service break a fortnight later. The Application and Products unit is where that gets settled, and maintenance and removals share a unit because fusion gel comes off by filing and soaking rather than by soaking alone.

The course runs across 4 modules and 23 units. Victoria, our tutor, demonstrates every stage on video, every unit is assessed, and you can resubmit as many times as you need. Study at your own pace with lifetime access; students typically take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Business training is included with every course, and you get access to our private student groups while you study.

What You’ll Be Able To Do

  • Choose between a tip, a dual form and a nail form for a fusion gel set, and know which the client’s nail shape calls for
  • Prepare the natural nail and place a bead of the right size — the most common beginner error is a bead far bigger than needed
  • Control the product with slip solution and tool, and build an apex that holds up rather than flattening out
  • Cure safely in thin enough layers to avoid heat spike
  • File and finish a cured set, which behaves differently under the file from acrylic
  • Infill and re-balance at two to three weeks
  • Remove a set by filing down and soaking off, without thinning the natural nail
  • Recognise the nail and skin conditions that rule out an enhancement, and know what to do instead
  • Price, promote and take payment for the service — covered in the Foundation module

What To Learn Alongside Fusion Gel

Fusion gel is one enhancement system among several, and clients ask for all of them:

  • Acrylic Nail Course — liquid and powder. Worth knowing both: acrylic is still the strongest option for a client who is hard on their hands.
  • Gel Extensions Course — soft gel built over a tip, a thinner result for clients who want less bulk.
  • Builder in a Bottle Course — a brush-on gel for strength and a short overlay on the natural nail.
  • Nail Shaping Course — symmetry and filing, which is where a fusion gel set is won or lost once it is cured.
  • eFile Nail Course — electric file work. Fusion gel removal is largely filing, so this pays for itself quickly.

What You’ll Need To Practise

You need fusion gel in at least one shade, slip solution, a dual-ended fusion gel tool, dual forms or tips, a UV or LED lamp, nail prep and a base or bonder, files and a buffer, and top coat. Slip solution is not optional and not interchangeable with alcohol — the wrong liquid will make the bead tear.

Our Control/Fusion Gel Kit has the set in one box if you would rather not source it piece by piece. Products you already own are fine — nothing in the course is tied to a brand.

Fusion Gel Course FAQs

Is fusion gel the same as PolyGel?

Yes. PolyGel and control gel are brand names for the same category of product, and the technique is identical whichever tub you own. The course teaches the method rather than a brand’s system.

Is it easier than acrylic?

More forgiving, which is not quite the same thing. The product does not set until you cure it, so you can keep working a bead until the shape is right instead of committing in thirty seconds. What it adds is slip-solution control and layer thickness, and those take their own practice.

Do I need to have done an acrylic or gel course first?

No. There is no prerequisite, and plenty of students take fusion gel as their first enhancement system precisely because of the extra working time. If you already do acrylic, the transferable part is your filing and apex work.

How long will the 23 units take me?

The fusion gel module is four units and the remaining 19 are the theory shared across our nail courses. The bead work wants real repetition — expect to throw away your first few nails. Students usually take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, with no deadline.

How is my work assessed?

All 23 units are assessed, with unlimited resubmissions and no extra charge. Victoria Arpels, BA (Hons), Cert Ed, demonstrates every stage on video and marks the assessed work herself.

Is the Fusion Gel Course accredited?

Yes — by ABT, IPHM and IGCT.

Will I be able to get insurance?

Our courses are recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens. Each insurer sets its own requirements, so check with the one you intend to use before you start taking bookings.

Does fusion gel soak off like gel polish?

Not on its own. A fusion gel set is filed down first and then soaked, which is why maintenance and removals are taught together in one unit. Treating it like gel polish and leaving a client in acetone for forty minutes is how natural nails get damaged.

Can I spread the cost?

Yes. Pay in 3 is available with Klarna or Clearpay at checkout.

What support do I get while I study?

You can ask questions as you work through the units, and you get access to our private student groups. Bead size and slip solution are the two things everyone gets wrong first, so it helps to see other students working through the same thing.

How The Course Works

1

How You Learn

Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.

2

How You’re Assessed

Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.

3

What You Finish With

When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Founder and Head of Training

  • Trained in beauty therapy
  • Bachelor of Arts (Hons)
  • Certificate in Education
  • Lectured in further education
  • Founded Next Step Beauty in 2008
  • More than 100,000 students trained

Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.

Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.

She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.

She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
