Gel extensions build length on a tip or a form in gel rather than liquid and powder. There is no monomer odour, the finished nail feels lighter on the natural plate, and the service suits clients who want length but find acrylic too hard or too strong-smelling — which makes it a sensible extension skill for a home or mobile setup.
The course takes you from nail preparation through tip sizing and application, then into gel application itself, structure, and the maintenance work that keeps a client coming back. It is studied online at your own pace, with video demonstrations you can replay and tutor feedback on the practical work you submit.
The course also covers the business groundwork every one of our courses includes: hygiene, insurance, health and safety, pricing and promoting what you offer.
Gel extensions sit naturally beside the other lamp-cured systems. Builder (hard) gel gives you a firmer product for clients who need more strength, and fusion gel suits you if you prefer working a bead. Gel polish is the service most clients book first, so it pairs well commercially.
If you want the liquid-and-powder route as well, the Acrylic Nail Course covers it, and full cover tips are the faster alternative when an appointment is short.
A UV or LED lamp, a gel system, tips and glue, a brush, prep products and files, plus a training hand to start on before you move to models. You can use equipment you already own — nothing here is tied to a particular brand.
If you would rather buy it in one go, the Gel Extensions Kit contains what the course calls for.
You should be able to prepare a natural nail competently. The course covers preparation again, but it spends most of its time on tips and gel structure rather than the basics of filing and cuticle work.
If you are starting from nothing, the Manicure Course first will save you repeating work later.
Gel cures under a lamp rather than setting in air, has no monomer odour, and feels lighter on the nail. Acrylic is harder wearing and cheaper per set.
Neither is better in the abstract — they suit different clients, and most technicians eventually offer both.
Tips, yes — there is a full module on sizing, fitting and blending them, which is the route most gel extension clients are given.
If you specifically want to build on forms without a tip, the Nail Sculpting Course covers that technique.
Usually preparation: product left on the cuticle area, oil on the plate, or gel flooding the sidewalls. Occasionally it is curing — coats applied too thick to cure through, or a lamp that does not match the gel.
The course works through each cause, because diagnosing a lift is a separate skill from applying a set.
Most students finish within a few weeks to a few months. The theory moves quickly; getting ten nails even and balanced is what takes the practice.
There is no deadline and your access does not expire, so a quiet month costs you nothing.
An accredited diploma certificate once your written work and photographic case studies have been marked by a tutor. The course is accredited by ABT, IPHM and IGCT, and recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens.
Insurers set their own requirements, so the certificate is what you present to them rather than cover in itself.
Your diploma is issued by Next Step Beauty and carries accreditation from the bodies below. Those accreditations are what insurers look for when you come to arrange cover.
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels
Founder and Head of Training
Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
