Add Gel Polish To Your Treatment Menu

Gel polish is colour, not length. A base coat, two coats of colour and a top coat are cured under a UV or LED lamp directly onto the client’s own nail, giving a hard, high-gloss finish that holds for three to four weeks without chipping or fading. It is one of the shortest appointments on a nail price list and the one clients rebook most reliably, which makes it the steadiest earner in a nail business rather than the showiest.

Because there is no tip, no sculpting and no product to build, gel polish is the sensible first gel skill to learn. This course carries no Tip Application module — everything happens on the natural nail — so what you are assessed on is preparation, cure and removal done properly. Get those three right and the colour lasts; get them wrong and it lifts within a week, which is why the treatment module gives a full unit to removals and aftercare.

The course runs across 4 modules and 22 units. Victoria, our tutor, demonstrates every technique on video, every unit is assessed, and you can resubmit as many times as you need. Study at your own pace with lifetime access to the material — students typically take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months depending on the time they have. Business training is included with every course, and you get access to our private student groups while you study.

What You’ll Be Able To Do

  • Prepare the natural nail so gel polish bonds — cuticle work, surface prep, dehydration and the order products go on in
  • Choose and use base coats, colour gels, top coats and lamps, and understand why cure times differ between UV and LED
  • Apply a full set with even coats, a clean cuticle line and no flooding of the sidewalls
  • Cure correctly, so the finish is hard and glossy rather than tacky, soft or wrinkled
  • Soak off and remove gel polish without filing into or damaging the natural nail plate
  • Recognise the nail and skin conditions that mean you should not treat a client, and know what to do instead
  • Give aftercare advice that keeps a set on for the full three to four weeks
  • Price the treatment, take payments and promote it — all covered in the Foundation module

What To Learn Alongside Gel Polish

Gel polish sits at the front of most nail menus, so it pairs with nearly everything:

What You’ll Need To Practise

You need a UV or LED lamp, a gel polish base coat, top coat and at least one colour, plus nail prep products, a cleanser, and remover wraps or foils. Practise on real hands rather than a training finger — gel polish has to sit against a living cuticle and flex with the nail, and a plastic tip teaches you neither.

Our Gel Polish Kit has everything on that list in one box if you would rather not assemble it yourself. You are welcome to use products you already own — nothing in the course is tied to a particular brand.

Gel Polish Course FAQs

Do I need any nail experience to start?

No. The Foundation module begins with standards, hygiene and setting up a work area, and the treatment module assumes you have never held a lamp. Gel polish is the most common starting point for people new to nails because the technique is contained — prep, coat, cure, remove — with no building or sculpting to learn at the same time.

How long will the 22 units take me?

There is no deadline and no cohort to keep pace with. Nineteen of the 22 units are theory, in Foundation, Anatomy and Physiology and Nail and Skin Healthcare, and that is where most of the reading sits; the three gel polish units are short but want repetition on real hands. Students usually take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.

How is my work assessed?

Every one of the 22 units is assessed, and if something is not right you resubmit — there is no limit on resubmissions and no extra charge. Victoria Arpels, BA (Hons), Cert Ed, demonstrates every technique on video and marks the assessed work herself.

Is the Gel Polish Course accredited?

Yes — by ABT, IPHM and IGCT.

Will I be able to get insurance?

Our courses are recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens. Each insurer sets its own requirements, so check with the one you intend to use before you start taking bookings.

Does this course cover nail extensions or added length?

No. Gel polish is colour on the natural nail, which is why there is no Tip Application module here. For length, Gel Extensions covers gel over a tip, and Builder in a Bottle adds strength and a short overlay without one.

What is the difference between gel polish and shellac?

Shellac is a brand of gel polish, not a separate system. The method you learn here — prep, base, colour, top coat, cure, soak off — is the same whichever brand ends up on your trolley.

Can I spread the cost?

Yes. Pay in 3 is available with Klarna or Clearpay at checkout.

What support do I get while I study?

You can ask questions as you work through the units, and you get access to our private student groups. That is where most gel polish questions get settled, because lifting and early chipping are nearly always a prep problem somebody else has already had.

How The Course Works

1

How You Learn

Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.

2

How You’re Assessed

Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.

3

What You Finish With

When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Who You’ll Be Learning From

Victoria Arpels

Founder and Head of Training

  • Trained in beauty therapy
  • Bachelor of Arts (Hons)
  • Certificate in Education
  • Lectured in further education
  • Founded Next Step Beauty in 2008
  • More than 100,000 students trained

Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.

Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.

She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.

She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
