Builder gel — hard gel, hard UV gel, whichever name your brand uses — is a thick, viscous gel brushed onto the nail and cured under a lamp. It gives you the strength of acrylic with the clarity and flex of gel, and no monomer odour, which is why it has quietly taken over as the default enhancement in a lot of home-based and shared salon spaces.
It does two jobs on a price list. As an overlay it strengthens a natural nail that keeps breaking, with almost no added bulk. Built over a tip or a form it makes a full extension that is lighter on the hand than the acrylic equivalent of the same length. It also repairs a single broken nail better than anything else, which is a ten-minute appointment most technicians undercharge for.
The detail that matters technically: unlike a soak-off gel, builder gel is non-porous. Acetone will not get through it, so a set is filed and buffed off rather than soaked off. Knowing that is the difference between a clean removal and a client sitting in acetone for forty minutes while nothing happens.
The course also covers the smile line properly — building the French into the gel rather than painting it on top, so it never grows out and never chips. Clients book that as a “forever French” and it is one of the most reliable requests in nails.
The course runs across 5 modules and 25 units, including a Tip Application module — so you learn to fit a tip as well as to overlay a natural nail, which is what lets you offer real length in builder gel. Victoria, our tutor, demonstrates every stage on video, every unit is assessed, and you can resubmit as many times as you need. Study at your own pace with lifetime access; students typically take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Business training is included with every course, and you get access to our private student groups while you study.
Builder gel sits in the middle of the gel family. These are the courses either side of it:
You need a pot of builder or hard gel — clear plus a natural pink and a white if you want to work smile lines — a stiff gel brush, a UV or LED lamp, nail prep and a bonder or primer, tips or nail forms, a cleanser, and files and a buffer. A hand file is enough to start, though an electric file makes removal far less tedious.
Do not buy acetone expecting it to take the product off. Builder gel is non-porous: the set is filed back. Budget for files instead.
Our Gel Extensions Kit brings the UV gel system together in one order, and is the kit we pair with this course. Products you already own are fine — nothing in the course is tied to a particular brand, though a gel too soft to hold an apex will make the structure work harder than it needs to be.
Thickness and removal. Builder gel is a thick potted gel, non-porous, strong enough for real length, and filed off. Builder in a Bottle is thinner, comes in a polish bottle with a brush, soaks off like gel polish, and is better suited to an overlay than an extension. Different products for different clients, and both are worth having.
No — acrylic is still the strongest. Builder gel is close, lighter on the hand, more flexible, and has no monomer smell. For a client who is hard on their nails, acrylic. For a client who wants strength without bulk or odour, this.
No. There is no prerequisite, and builder gel is a reasonable first enhancement because you are brushing a product on rather than controlling a bead against a set time.
No, and this is the thing most often got wrong. Builder gel is non-porous, so acetone cannot penetrate it. A set is filed and buffed back, which the removals unit covers properly. Leaving a client soaking in acetone will achieve nothing except dehydrating their skin.
A smile line built into the gel itself rather than painted on the surface, so it does not grow out and cannot chip. The course covers how to set and refine that line, and it is one of the most consistently booked requests in nails.
All 25 units are assessed, and if something is not right you resubmit — there is no limit on resubmissions and no extra charge. Victoria Arpels, BA (Hons), Cert Ed, demonstrates every stage on video and marks the assessed work herself.
Yes — by ABT, IPHM and IGCT.
Our courses are recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens. Each insurer sets its own requirements, so check with the one you intend to use before you start taking bookings.
Yes, and for a lot of clients that is the whole point. An overlay adds strength to a nail that keeps breaking with very little added thickness, and it is the service to suggest to someone who wants their own nails to grow rather than to wear extensions.
Yes. Pay in 3 is available with Klarna or Clearpay at checkout.
You can ask questions as you work through the units, and you get access to our private student groups. Lifting at the sidewall and a flat apex are the two recurring builder gel problems, and both are easier to diagnose from a photo of the nail than from a description of it.
Your diploma is issued by Next Step Beauty and carries accreditation from the bodies below. Those accreditations are what insurers look for when you come to arrange cover.
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels
Founder and Head of Training
Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
