Sculpting builds the nail from nothing. A paper or reusable form goes under the free edge, product is laid onto it, and the extension is shaped by hand — no tip, no glue. That means no join to blend, no plastic to hide and nothing under the product that can lift away from the natural nail.
It is the skill that separates a technician who applies nails from one who makes them. A tip commits you to the shape in the box; a form commits you to nothing, so you can give one client a long almond and the next a short square from the same tub, and correct an uneven nail bed as you go rather than working around it. Clients with a wide nail plate, a bitten nail or an asymmetric free edge are the ones who notice.
This course teaches it in both systems. Application of Acrylic Sculpture and Application of Gel Sculpture are separate units, because a bead of acrylic on a form behaves nothing like gel on a form — one is working against a set time, the other against gravity until you cure it. Removal and maintenance are also taught per system.
The course runs across 4 modules and 24 units. Victoria, our tutor, demonstrates every stage on video, every unit is assessed, and you can resubmit as many times as you need. Study at your own pace with lifetime access; students typically take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Business training is included with every course, and you get access to our private student groups while you study.
Sculpting is the advanced end of extensions. These are the courses either side of it:
You need nail forms — paper or reusable — plus either acrylic liquid and powder with a sculpting brush, or hard builder gel with a UV or LED lamp, and ideally both since the course covers both. Add nail prep and a primer or bonder, a file and buffer, and acetone for removal practice.
Buy forms in bulk. A sculpted nail you are unhappy with gets taken off and started again, and each attempt uses a form.
Our Sculpting Kit brings the set together in one order if you would rather not assemble it. Products you already own are fine — nothing in the course is tied to a brand.
There is no prerequisite on this course, but it is honest to say sculpting is harder than tip work. If you have never handled liquid and powder or builder gel, Acrylic or Gel Extensions first will make this one considerably less frustrating — you will already know how the product behaves and only have the form to learn.
Not better, different. A tip is faster and perfectly good on a regular nail plate. Sculpting wins when the nail is wide, bitten or asymmetric, when the client wants a shape no tip comes in, or when you want a nail with no join in it at all. Most technicians offer both and charge more for sculpting.
Both. Application has a unit per system, and so do removal and maintenance. That is why the treatment module is five units rather than three.
The reading is 19 units of shared theory and goes quickly. The sculpting itself takes longer than any of our tip-based courses, because you are learning to produce a shape rather than refine one. Expect to redo nails. Students usually take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, with no deadline.
All 24 units are assessed, with unlimited resubmissions and no extra charge. Victoria Arpels, BA (Hons), Cert Ed, demonstrates every stage on video and marks the assessed work herself.
Yes — by ABT, IPHM and IGCT.
Our courses are recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens. Each insurer sets its own requirements, so check with the one you intend to use before you start taking bookings.
For the first few, yes — it is worth learning to fit a form on something that does not move. After that, go to real hands. A training finger has no living cuticle, no sidewall to seal against and no flex, and all three change how a form sits.
Yes. Pay in 3 is available with Klarna or Clearpay at checkout.
You can ask questions as you work through the units, and you get access to our private student groups. Form fitting is the thing everyone struggles with first, and a photo of where your form is sitting usually gets the problem diagnosed in minutes.
Your diploma is issued by Next Step Beauty and carries accreditation from the bodies below. Those accreditations are what insurers look for when you come to arrange cover.
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels
Founder and Head of Training
Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
