You study online at your own pace, with video tutorials and eBooks covering the theory. You practise first on synthetic skins, then on your own models, and submit photographs of that work for your tutor to assess. You get written feedback, and if something needs improving you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.

What You’ll Be Able To Do

• Understand how the treatment works — pigment implanted into the upper layers of the skin, and what that means for depth, pressure and healing.
• Read the anatomy of the lips and the surrounding skin, so you know how structure and healing affect the way pigment settles and how long it holds.
• Choose the right pigment using colour theory, so the shade suits your client’s natural lip colour and skin tone rather than fighting it.
• Map and balance the lip line, correcting asymmetry and thin areas without overstepping the natural border.
• Work the technique itself — needle configuration, angle, pressure and coverage — and build consistency through repetition.
• Consult and screen your client, recognising contra-indications, including cold sores, and giving clear pre-treatment advice.
• Work to professional hygiene and safety standards, including sterilisation and the legislation that applies to the treatment.
• Advise on aftercare, so your client knows what to expect as the lips heal and how to look after them.

What To Learn Alongside Semi-Permanent Lip Liner

Semi-permanent lip liner is one of four semi-permanent make up treatments we train in, and it is often the third a technician adds. Most start with brows — either ombre and powder brows or microblading — then add semi-permanent eyeliner, so a client can have her brows, eyes and lips done in one place.

Lip Liner Course FAQs

How long does it take?

There are thirty-eight units across five modules, and four client case studies to complete. There is no deadline. Finding four models willing to have lip work done usually takes longer than the study itself — most students finish within a few weeks to a few months.

How is the course delivered?

Everything is online. The eleven-unit Semi-Permanent Make Up Foundation module covers the shared groundwork — skin, wound healing, colour theory, needle configurations and anaesthetics — then the lip liner module starts with the anatomy of the lips, which behaves differently from brow skin and changes how pigment settles. Each unit has video tutorials and an eBook.

Who do I practise on?

You start on synthetic skins, which has its own unit in the lip liner module and forms part of the assessed work, then arrange four of your own models. Lips are less forgiving than brows for symmetry, so the skins practice matters more here than on some treatments.

How is my practical work assessed?

You submit photographs of your skins practice and of four client treatments for your tutor to assess, with written feedback. Lip work is judged on the accuracy of the border and the evenness of colour through the body of the lip. If anything needs improving you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.

Do I have to buy the kit?

No. You can use your own machine, needles and pigments. The Semi Permanent Makeup Kit is there if you would prefer everything supplied in one go.

What support do I get?

Your tutor marks the case study photographs and tells you specifically what to change — on lips that is most often symmetry at the cupid’s bow and consistency of colour. You also get access to our private student group.

Is this the same as a lip tattoo?

It is a form of cosmetic tattooing. The pigment is worked into the upper layers of the skin rather than the deeper layer a body tattoo reaches, so the result softens over time rather than staying put. Clients may say “lip blush”, “lip tattoo” or “lip liner” when they enquire.

Do I need to travel anywhere?

No. The theory and video tutorials are studied from home, you work on your own skins and models wherever you are, and the case study photographs are submitted online.

Does the treatment hurt, and will I learn about numbing?

Lips are a more sensitive area than brows, and how a client experiences it varies. Anaesthetics is a dedicated unit in the Semi-Permanent Make Up Foundation module — what can be used, when, and the safety considerations — so you can advise a client properly beforehand.
