Acrylic is the strongest enhancement on a nail menu and the one clients come back for every three weeks. Liquid monomer and polymer powder are picked up as a bead and worked onto the nail, setting in air with no lamp — which makes it the cheapest system per set and the most durable for anyone hard on their hands.
The course takes you from nail preparation and tip application through to the acrylic itself: ratio, bead placement, building structure, and the infill and removal work that keeps a client in your column rather than starting again every visit. Studied online at your own pace, with video demonstrations you can replay and tutor feedback on the practical work you submit.
It also covers the business groundwork included with every one of our courses: hygiene, insurance, health and safety, pricing and promoting what you offer.
If you are starting out, the Manicure Course teaches the preparation acrylic sits on and the Gel Polish Course adds the service clients book most often.
Once your beads are consistent, sculpting on a form removes the tip and the join entirely, and the eFile Nail Course takes real time off every rebalance. Quick dip is the low-odour alternative if monomer is a problem in your space.
Liquid monomer, polymer powders, an acrylic brush, tips and glue or forms, files and a dust brush, plus a training hand before you move to models. Acrylic has an odour and creates dust, so ventilation and a mask matter more here than with gel.
You can use equipment you already own — nothing in the course depends on a particular brand. If you would rather buy it in one go, the Acrylic Nail Kit covers what the course calls for.
No, but acrylic is less forgiving than gel polish, so expect to spend longer on the bead before anything looks tidy. The course starts from zero and assumes you have never held an acrylic brush.
If you have never done nails at all, taking the Manicure Course alongside it means your preparation is sound before you add product.
Usually product flooding the cuticle area, or a bead too wet that runs before it sets. Either way the acrylic ends up sitting on skin rather than bonded to the plate, and it lifts within days.
The course works through ratio, placement and how far from the cuticle to start, because this single fault causes most early complaints.
A bead that holds its shape and settles slowly rather than running or dragging. Too wet and it floods; too dry and it drags, traps air and crumbles under pressure.
Ratio is taught by what the bead does in the three seconds after you pick it up, and how to adjust when the room is cold or the product is new to you.
Applied and removed properly, no. Damage comes from over-filing the plate during preparation, prising product off, or leaving a set long past its infill date.
Removal and infill technique are taught alongside application for that reason.
Monomer has a strong odour, which matters if you work from home or a small room. Ventilation, a lidded dappen dish and keeping product covered all make a real difference.
If odour is a dealbreaker, the Quick Dip Nails Course uses dipped powder over resin instead, with far less smell.
Most students finish within a few weeks to a few months. The theory moves quickly; getting ten nails even and balanced is what takes the repetition, and acrylic rewards more practice than most treatments.
There is no deadline and your access does not expire.
An accredited diploma certificate once your written work and photographic case studies have been marked by a tutor. The course is accredited by ABT, IPHM and IGCT, and recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens.
Insurers set their own requirements, so the certificate is what you present to them rather than cover in itself.
Your diploma is issued by Next Step Beauty and carries accreditation from the bodies below. Those accreditations are what insurers look for when you come to arrange cover.
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels
Founder and Head of Training
Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
