This is for you if the designs are the part you actually want to do. Plenty of technicians can apply a set but go quiet when a client opens her phone and asks for something specific — this is the package that means you can say yes.
You do not need to be able to draw, and there is no prerequisite. It helps if you already apply gel polish or enhancements, because nail art goes on top of a finished set; if you do not yet, learn a base service alongside it.
If you only want one style rather than all three, the individual nail art courses are cheaper.
The three are genuinely different hand skills rather than three versions of one. Tool work is placement and precision. Gel work is design cured into the set so it lasts as long as the colour. One Stroke is brushwork, where a single loaded stroke lays down shading and highlight together.
Taken together they cover almost anything a client brings you a photograph of. Taken separately you would work through the same nineteen units of shared theory three times over, and pay more.
Three courses, each with its own certificate:
Plus the Foundation, anatomy and physiology, and nail and skin healthcare modules, business training, and our private student groups.
Six modules and thirty assessed units, eleven of them nail art technique.
Nothing to wait for — enrol and the designs are yours to work through. Klarna and Clearpay both let you spread the cost over three payments.
You get lifetime access with no deadline, unlimited resubmissions, and a certificate for each of the three courses as you complete them. Business training is included, along with access to our private student groups — which for nail art is the most useful part, because people post their work and you see the same brief handled ten different ways.
Brushwork takes repetition and your first roses will be heavy. That is normal, and you have as long as you need.
Three courses, three sets of tools. For Nail Art: pens or a fine liner, a dotting tool, gems and a wax pick-up tool, striping tape, glitter, transfers or foils. For Gel Polish Nail Art: gel paints or gel polish in several colours, a detail brush and a UV or LED lamp. For One Stroke: a flat one-stroke brush and acrylic paints that will sit on the brush long enough to double-load.
Practice tips and a holder will do for all three. Nail art is one of the few things that practises just as well on a tip as on a client, because the design does not have to flex with a living nail.
Our Ultimate Nail Art Kit covers all three courses in one order. Anything you already own is fine — nothing here is brand-specific.
For two of the three, no — Nail Art and Gel Polish Nail Art are built from tools and placement. One Stroke is brushwork, and that is the one that takes practice. It is taught as six set designs rather than as freehand painting, which is exactly how brushwork is learnable by people who cannot draw.
There is no prerequisite, but nail art is applied over a finished set, so it is most useful alongside Gel Polish or an enhancement system. If you are starting from nothing, learn a base service first and add this.
Yes, and you also avoid repeating the Foundation, anatomy and healthcare units three times. You still get a certificate for each of the three courses.
Nineteen of the 30 are the shared theory and 11 are nail art technique, so the reading goes quickly. One Stroke is where the hours go — six designs, each wanting repetition before it looks clean. There is no deadline and lifetime access, so you can come back to a design months later.
All 30 units are assessed, with unlimited resubmissions and no extra charge. Victoria Arpels, BA (Hons), Cert Ed, demonstrates every design on video and marks the assessed work herself.
Yes — by ABT, IPHM and IGCT.
Our courses are recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens. Each insurer sets its own requirements, so check with the one you intend to use before you start taking bookings.
No. Ombre is a separate technique worked in gel and acrylic rather than painted on, so it has its own courses — Ombre Nails and Milky Designs.
Yes. Pay in 3 is available with Klarna or Clearpay at checkout.
You can ask questions as you work through the units, and you get access to our private student groups. Nail art is the most visual thing we teach, and the groups are where students post designs and compare how the same brief has been handled ten different ways.
Your diploma is issued by Next Step Beauty and carries accreditation from the bodies below. Those accreditations are what insurers look for when you come to arrange cover.
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels
Founder and Head of Training
Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
