An ombre is a gradient with no line in it. Instead of a hard smile line across the nail, the colour fades from one shade into another — white into pink for a baby boomer, or a colour into a tip for a French ombre. It is the single most requested nail design on social media and has been for years, because it suits every nail length and does not date the way a sharp French tip does.
It is also the design that most exposes a shaky hand. There is no edge to hide behind: a blend that stops a millimetre short, or goes a shade too opaque, shows up instantly and shows up on all ten nails at once. Getting it even across a full set is the actual skill.
This course teaches it in both systems, across six complete designs: Gel Baby Boomer, Gel Ombre with Blue, Gel Ombre with Orange, Acrylic Baby Boomer, Acrylic Baby Boomer with Glitter and Acrylic Ombre Glitter with Pink. Three worked in gel, three in acrylic, because blending a gel that self-levels and blending acrylic that sets to a clock are two different problems.
It is written for technicians who already work in gel or acrylic. The course runs across 3 modules and 22 units and does not repeat the nail and skin healthcare module, because it assumes you covered that on the enhancement course you already hold. Victoria, our tutor, demonstrates every design on video, every unit is assessed, and you can resubmit as many times as you need. Study at your own pace with lifetime access; business training is included with every course, and you get access to our private student groups while you study.
Ombre is a design technique applied to an enhancement, so what matters is the system under it:
You need whichever system you already work in — acrylic liquid and powder, or hard gel and a lamp — plus a white and a natural pink, at least one colour, a fine glitter, a blending brush or sponge, files and a top coat. Ideally both systems, since the course covers both.
Practise tips are fine for learning the blend itself. Do a full set on real hands before you charge for it, because consistency across ten nails is the part a single tip cannot teach you.
Products you already own are fine — nothing in the course is tied to a brand.
Yes — this course is written on that assumption, which is why the nail and skin healthcare module is not repeated here. Ombre is a way of colouring an enhancement, so you need to be able to build one first. If you are starting from nothing, take Acrylic, Gel Extensions or Gel Polish first.
A baby boomer is an ombre worked in white and natural pink so the nail looks like a French manicure with the line removed — soft, pale and neutral. It is the most-booked version of this technique, and the course teaches it in both gel and acrylic.
This course is six designs across gel and acrylic: baby boomer, coloured gradients and glitter work. Milky Designs is three designs in the milky style specifically — translucent white blended into a sheer base. Neither includes the other, and plenty of students take both.
Both, three designs each. That is deliberate: a self-levelling gel and a setting acrylic behave nothing alike when you are trying to blend them, so the technique has to be taught twice rather than described once.
Sixteen of the 22 are Foundation and anatomy theory, which reads quickly, and six are the designs. Study time is short; practice time depends entirely on how fast your blending becomes repeatable across a full set. There is no deadline and lifetime access.
All 22 units are assessed, with unlimited resubmissions and no extra charge. Victoria Arpels, BA (Hons), Cert Ed, demonstrates every design on video and marks the assessed work herself.
Yes — by ABT, IPHM and IGCT.
Our courses are recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens. Each insurer sets its own requirements, so check with the one you intend to use before you start taking bookings.
Because the new content is six design units rather than a full treatment module. Same assessment, same accreditation, but we are not going to charge a full course price for a design technique added to a system you already hold.
Yes. Pay in 3 is available with Klarna or Clearpay at checkout.
You can ask questions as you work through the units, and you get access to our private student groups. A visible cut-off line in a gradient is the universal first problem, and it is far easier to spot in somebody else’s photo than in your own hand.
Your diploma is issued by Next Step Beauty and carries accreditation from the bodies below. Those accreditations are what insurers look for when you come to arrange cover.
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels
Founder and Head of Training
Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
