Gel is what most salon columns are built on: cured under a lamp, worn for two to three weeks, and rebooked without being asked. These courses cover polish, overlays and gel extensions, and explain which system does which job.

I have just passed the gel nail course on next step beauty, the course was great because I could take my time and go at my own pace. It’s easy to get in touch if you need any help and your problem is solved straight away.
I did the online builder gel & efile course I found them informative, easy to follow and use as well as uploading case studies simple too… I have been extremely pleased with the service overall and will use again for sure x
Just passed the gel polish course, which is part of my bigger ‘ultimate nail technician’ suite of courses, and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I loved that I could go at my own pace and I loved the video tutorials. The written tests are fun and engaging, alongside the online textbook.

After Your Course: From Diploma to Your First Clients
Finishing your course is the start of the next step. Here’s how students go from learning to working with clients.
1. Practise on Your Models
You will practise on models and photograph your work as you go. Gel is judged on the finish and on how it wears, so your photographs and your removals both matter.
2. Get Your Diploma
Pass your assessed case studies and receive your diploma certificate. If an assessment needs another try, you can resubmit as many times as you need.
3. Plan Your Business
Business training is included with every course to help you set your prices, present your work and find your first clients.
4. Keep Growing
Add a system as your client list grows. A gel polish client who wants a little length is the easiest person in your column to move onto builder gel.
Why Specialise in Gel?
Gel is the backbone of most nail columns. It cures in seconds, it holds colour for two to three weeks, and it grows out on a schedule that books the next appointment for you.
- The Most Requested Service: gel polish is what most clients ask for by name, so it is the quickest skill to turn into bookings.
- Fast Appointments: a gel polish fits comfortably inside an hour, which means more clients in a day than longer enhancement work allows.
- A Clear Upgrade Path: polish leads to overlays, overlays lead to length. You can grow the ticket price without finding new clients.
- Lower Setup Than Acrylic: a lamp, a few gels and brushes. No liquid monomer, no extraction, and far less smell in a home setting.
- Infills Keep the Diary Full: builder and extension clients return every three to four weeks for maintenance rather than starting from scratch.
Which Gel System Does What
Gel polish, builder in a bottle, hard gel, fusion gel and gel extensions are all cured under a lamp and all called “gel”. They behave very differently once they are on the nail.
Gel Polish
Thin colour cured under a lamp. No length, no structure, two to three weeks of wear. The service clients ask for by name and the one that fills most columns.
Builder in a Bottle
A thicker gel supplied in a polish bottle and brushed straight on. Adds strength over a natural nail and a little length, with no mixing and a short learning curve.
Builder (Hard) Gel
A firmer gel taken from a pot with a brush. Holds genuine structure and length, needs an apex building in, and files differently to the softer gels.
Fusion Gel
A hybrid worked like acrylic but cured under a lamp. It gives you bead control and placement with the working time of a gel rather than a setting liquid.
Gel Extensions
Length built over a form or a tip in gel rather than acrylic. Lighter on the natural nail and a gentler service to sell to a nervous client.
Gel Polish vs Builder in a Bottle vs Hard Gel
All three cure under a lamp. What separates them is how thick the product is, how much structure it holds, and how it comes off.
| Gel Polish | Builder in a Bottle | Hard Gel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consistency | Thin, self-levelling | Medium, brushed on | Thick, sculpted |
| Adds length | No | A little | Yes, over a form or tip |
| Structure | None | Light reinforcement | Full apex |
| Typical rebook | 2 to 3 weeks | 3 weeks | 3 to 4 weeks, infill |
| Removal | Soak off | Usually soak off | Filed back |
| Learn it | First | Once your prep is clean | Once you can file an apex |
Most technicians stock at least two of the three and choose by the client’s nail plate and how much length she wants. If you want the liquid-and-powder route instead, that sits under Acrylic Courses.
Gel Nail Courses UK: Train in Gel Polish and Gel Extensions Online
Our online gel nail courses cover the full range of lamp-cured systems, from a two-week polish to full extensions built in gel, and explain which one belongs on which client.
Start With Polish
The Gel Polish Course is where almost everyone begins. It covers nail preparation, how to apply thin even coats, how curing actually works, cap-free edges, and — the part that causes most of the complaints in a new technician’s first year — safe removal. Most lifting and peeling problems are a preparation or curing fault rather than a product fault, and that is taught properly rather than glossed over.
Then the Systems That Build
Once polish is clean and consistent, the next decision is which strengthening system to add. Builder in a bottle is the gentlest step up: a thicker gel in a familiar bottle that reinforces a natural nail and adds a touch of length. Hard gel holds a real apex and genuine length but files back rather than soaking off. Fusion gel suits anyone who likes working a bead but prefers a lamp cure to a setting liquid, and gel extensions build length over a form or tip without moving to acrylic at all.
You do not need all of them. Many technicians run a full column on gel polish plus one building system, adding a second only when clients start asking for something it cannot do.
How the Courses Work
Every technique is demonstrated on video by Victoria, our tutor, filmed close enough to see how much product is on the brush and how it self-levels before curing. You can replay a step as many times as you need while you work. Written assessments and photographic case studies are marked by a tutor who tells you what to change, and if a submission is not right first time you resubmit as often as you need at no extra cost.
Access does not expire and there are no deadlines, so you can train around work. Most students finish within a few weeks to a few months.
Kit and Practising
You will need a UV or LED lamp, the relevant gel system, brushes and prep products. You can buy a kit alongside your course or use what you already own — the teaching covers how products behave rather than one brand’s range, so it carries across whatever you end up stocking. Practise on a training hand first, then on models, and photograph the results for your case studies. Friends and family are fine.
Accreditation
All of our gel courses are accredited by ABT, IPHM and IGCT, and recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens. Insurers set their own requirements, so the certificate is what you present to them rather than cover in itself. Business training is included with every course. If you would rather work with liquid and powder, that route sits under Acrylic Courses.

What Our Students Say
I started my beauty industry journey with Next Step Beauty in 2017 and over the years I have invested in several of their online courses. I love being able to learn at my own pace and watch videos again and again to improve my technique. Victoria is an excellent video presenter and always explains what you should and shouldn't do and why. Delighted to have passed my Builder in a Bottle course, given that there's so much demand for this service nowadays.
Mel
I have recently completed the Gel Polish Course and Hard Gel Course. I found the courses very informative and easy to follow. The video tutorials help you to learn step by step and tutor support is always on hand if help or advice is needed. I am currently in the process of setting up my home salon room. These courses have given me the knowledge, qualifications and confidence to start up my own business.
Hollie Tibble
Firstly I submitted my gel polish course on Monday night and received my certificate three days later, and I wasn't expecting the results back for two weeks! I then sent them an email, and within 20 minutes I had a reply and my request was sorted. Shortly after I got a phone call from Jessica who is part of the team, personally congratulating me on passing the gel course. Fantastic service!

Gel Nail Course FAQs
Which Gel Course Should I Take First?
Gel Polish. It is the service clients ask for by name, the quickest to turn into bookings, and the one that teaches the preparation every other gel system depends on.
Add a building system afterwards once your polish work is consistently clean and lasting its three weeks.
What Is the Difference Between Builder in a Bottle and Hard Gel?
Thickness and what happens at removal. Builder in a bottle is brushed on from a familiar polish bottle, reinforces a natural nail and usually soaks off. Hard gel is taken from a pot, holds a proper apex and real length, and is filed back rather than soaked.
The comparison table above sets them side by side with gel polish.
Why Does My Gel Keep Lifting?
Almost always preparation or curing rather than the product. Cuticle work left behind, oil on the plate, product flooding the sidewalls, coats applied too thick to cure through, or a lamp that no longer matches the gel.
Each course works through these causes in order, because diagnosing a lift is a different skill from applying a set.
Do I Need an Expensive Lamp?
You need a lamp that suits your gel. Wattage headlines matter less than whether the wavelength matches the photoinitiator in the product, which is why mixing a cheap lamp with an unfamiliar gel causes problems.
The courses explain how to check this so you can buy sensibly rather than expensively.
Can I Learn Gel Online?
Gel suits video better than most treatments, because the critical moments are visual: how loaded the brush is, how the product settles before curing, where the apex sits when you look down the barrel of the nail.
You film none of that in a busy classroom. Here you replay it until it makes sense, then submit photographs of your own work for a tutor to assess.
Are the Gel Courses Accredited?
Yes — ABT, IPHM and IGCT, and recognised by insurers including Towergate, Radius, Insync and Balens. Insurers apply their own criteria, so treat the certificate as the document you present rather than cover in itself.
Is Gel Better Than Acrylic?
Neither is better; they fail and wear differently. Gel is lighter, has far less odour and soaks off in most systems, which suits home working and nervous clients. Acrylic is stronger under heavy wear and cheaper per set.
Most established technicians offer both. If you want the liquid-and-powder route, it lives on our Acrylic Courses page.
