Semi-permanent eyeliner places pigment into the lash line, so a client wakes up with her liner already done. It is a treatment clients come back for, and it sits naturally alongside brow and lash work on a treatment menu. This course takes you from the anatomy of the eye through to aftercare.
You study online at your own pace, with video tutorials and eBooks covering the theory. You practise on your own models and submit photographs of that work for your tutor to assess. You get written feedback, and if something needs improving you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
Semi-permanent eyeliner is one of four semi-permanent make up treatments we train in, and it is usually offered alongside brow work. Technicians commonly pair it with ombre and powder brows or microblading, and add semi-permanent lip liner so a client can have her brows, eyes and lips done by the same person.
You can use your own equipment and pigments, or buy our Semi Permanent Makeup Kit if you would rather have everything supplied in one go.
There are thirty-seven units across five modules, and four client case studies to complete. The eyeliner module itself is the most compact of our semi-permanent treatments at three units, so most of the study is the shared foundation — and it is arranging the four models that sets the pace. Most students finish within a few weeks to a few months.
Everything is online. The eleven-unit Semi-Permanent Make Up Foundation module covers the shared groundwork — skin, wound healing, colour theory, needle configurations and anaesthetics — then the eyeliner module starts with the anatomy of the eye before pre-procedure advice and the procedure itself. Each unit has video tutorials and an eBook.
You practise on synthetic skins first, then arrange four of your own models. Working this close to the eye means most students spend longer on skins before their first model than they would for a brow treatment.
You submit photographs of your practice and of four client treatments for your tutor to assess, with written feedback. Eyeliner is judged largely on how clean and even the line is and how well it sits against the lash line. If anything needs improving you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
Semi-permanent eyeliner lasts up to three years, depending on the client’s skin and how they care for it.
No. You can use your own machine, needles and pigments. The Semi Permanent Makeup Kit is there if you would prefer everything supplied in one go.
Your tutor marks the case study photographs and tells you specifically what to change — on eyeliner that is usually line thickness and keeping it even from inner to outer corner. You also get access to our private student group.
It is a form of cosmetic tattooing. The pigment is worked into the upper layers of the skin rather than the deeper layer a body tattoo reaches, so it softens over time. Clients may ask for “eyeliner tattoo”, “lash line enhancement” or “permanent eyeliner”.
No. The theory and video tutorials are studied from home, you work on your own skins and models wherever you are, and the case study photographs are submitted online.
The eye area is sensitive and how a client experiences it varies. Anaesthetics is a dedicated unit in the Semi-Permanent Make Up Foundation module — what can be used, when, and the safety considerations — so you can advise a client properly beforehand.
Yes. You can spread the cost over three interest-free payments at the checkout.
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels
Founder and Head of Training
Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
