Ombre and powder brows build a soft, shaded brow by working pigment into the upper layers of the skin with a machine, using a dotting or pixelation technique rather than hair-like strokes. The finish reads like a lightly pencilled brow, softer at the front and more defined through the tail, and it is a treatment clients choose on the strength of the work they can see — which makes it one worth taking the time to learn properly.
You study online at your own pace, with video tutorials and eBooks covering the theory. You practise first on synthetic skins, then on your own models, and submit photographs of that work for your tutor to assess. You get written feedback, and if something needs improving you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
Ombre and powder brows is one of four semi-permanent make up treatments we train in. It sits closest to microblading, which builds the brow from hair-like strokes instead of shading, and many technicians offer both so they can suit the client in front of them. semi-permanent eyeliner and semi-permanent lip liner are the natural next additions.
You will need a semi-permanent make up machine, needles and pigments, synthetic skins to practise on, and people to work on for your case studies. If you would rather have everything supplied in one go, our Semi Permanent Makeup Kit has the tools and products to get you started.
There are thirty-eight units across five modules, and four client case studies to complete. There is no deadline. In practice it is arranging the four models, not the theory, that sets the pace — most students finish within a few weeks to a few months.
Everything is online. The eleven-unit Semi-Permanent Make Up Foundation module covers the groundwork shared by every SPMU treatment — skin, wound healing, colour theory, needle configurations and anaesthetics — before the four units specific to ombre and powder brows. Each unit has video tutorials and an eBook.
You start on synthetic skins, which has its own unit in the brows module and forms part of the assessed work, then arrange four of your own models. Most students begin with friends and family who understand they are training, and build up as their shading becomes more even.
You submit photographs of your skins practice and of four client treatments for your tutor to assess, with written feedback on what is working and what to change. Shading is judged on evenness and the gradient through the tail. If anything needs improving you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
Microblading cuts fine, hair-like strokes into the skin with a manual blade. Ombre and powder brows shade the brow with a machine using a dotting or pixelation technique, for a softer, more filled-in finish. Many technicians learn both and choose per client. Our Microblading Course covers the stroke technique.
No. You can use your own machine, needles and pigments. The Semi Permanent Makeup Kit is there if you would prefer the machine, needles, pigments and practice skins supplied together.
Your tutor marks the case study photographs and tells you specifically what to change — usually depth, pressure or evenness of coverage in the early submissions. You also get access to our private student group.
It is a form of cosmetic tattooing, yes. The pigment is worked into the upper layers of the skin rather than the deeper layer a body tattoo reaches, which is why the result softens over time. Clients use “eyebrow tattoo”, “powder brows” and “ombre brows” fairly interchangeably.
No. The theory and video tutorials are studied from home, you work on your own skins and models wherever you are, and the case study photographs are submitted online. There is nowhere to attend and no fixed dates.
How a client experiences it varies. Anaesthetics is a dedicated unit in the Semi-Permanent Make Up Foundation module — what can be used, when, and the safety considerations — so you can advise a client properly before you start.
Yes. You can spread the cost over three interest-free payments at the checkout.
Your login details arrive by email as soon as you enrol, and the platform works on a computer, tablet or phone. Each unit has tutorial videos and an eBook covering the theory, followed by a multiple-choice assessment you can retake as often as you need. Completing a module unlocks the next one.
Once you have worked through the theory, you submit case studies of your practical work. Your tutor assesses them against industry standards and gives you written feedback. If they ask for changes, you can resubmit as many times as you need, at no extra cost.
When you complete the course you receive a diploma certificate, available to download straight away and yours to keep. Your course materials stay available for life, so you can go back over anything later.

Victoria Arpels
Founder and Head of Training
Victoria started where most of our students start. She trained in beauty therapy while working as a therapist in a busy spa — learning the theory in one place and practising on real clients in the other.
Then she kept adding to what she could offer, building up treatment by treatment through intensive specialist courses, before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Certificate in Education, and to lecture in further education. She has been the student learning an unfamiliar technique and the tutor assessing someone else’s work, which is a large part of why our courses are built the way they are.
She founded Next Step Beauty in 2008 because getting good training still came down to what you could afford and how close you happened to be to a college. More than 100,000 students have trained with us since.
She has stayed close to the teaching rather than stepping back from it. As Head of Training, Victoria works with the tutor team who assess the case studies you submit and write the feedback that comes back to you, and she is personally involved in the private student groups. Whichever course you choose, you are learning from people who had to practise it themselves first.
